So, an interesting situation was posed to us earlier today in my philosophy lecture, and I'd like to see what you all think about it.

You are walking in a restaurant, and you pass by a person who is face-down in their soup. If you don't pull his/her head out of the soup, they will drown. Do you pull their head out, or keep walking?

Also, another interesting question came up from this: what's the difference between killing a person and letting them die?

I run to the bar and say, "I'll have what he's having!"

Well, killing someone is taking their life according to my terms. Letting them die might imply that they are already dying, whether I'm involved ot not.

That's the stupidest question I've ever heard.

It sounds like one of those behavioral psychology situations...that shows how people would rather ignore what's going on than bother to get involved. However, that situation only holds up when you have no idea that he will die otherwise. (i.e. maybe he's just taking a nap, I don't want to risk public humiliation by doing anything about it). Knowledge of the fact that he will die makes the question irrelevant.

Why would you not save a life, given a risk-free opportunity to do so?

If I recognized him I might feel differently, of course.

Wait for him to die and take his wallet and watch.

Tricky has it right though, that sounds like some bad philosomaphizing for a philosophy class, next you are gonna be asking us to put a X on the line that goes from Fear ------ Love

I think letting someone die is the same as killing them.
Glad you brought that up. Why then are you sitting at your computer reading and posting? Shouldn't you be flying all over the world giving out food to the needy, saving murder victims, and generally keeping people alive? I mean, you know that there are people dying out there, yet you do nothing about it, therefore, you are letting them die.

What kind of soup? Your beef barley or chicken noodle is dangerous stuff, but the creamy texture of a clam chowder holds enough oxygen for at least a couple minutes.

Of course I pull him out. What kind of stupid question is that? And how does someone wind up face down in their soup and unable to extract themselves? If they're unconscious or something, they've probably been breathing soup or a while which can't be doing them any favors.

Unless it's a rich clam chowder.

I agree with Tricky, it's a stupid ****** question, what type of person would you be if you knew the guy was dieing and let him die in his own soup.

If you want a more ambiguous question how about, you walk by a guy laying on the sidewalk on his back a pool of vomit next to his head and no obvious signs of breathing. Would you stop and check to see if he was alive?

This happened to me in real life. I called an ambulance. It turns out he was breathing - just dead drunk - and the rescue personnel were less than impressed that they had to rouse him.

I felt like a tit, even though I was trying to "do the right thing".

Doesn't this restaurant have a waitstaff? Don't they kow deaders don't tip?

Seriously, my instinct is to pull the guy out of the soup and try to save his life.

The little cynical guy on my shoulder says ***** him. Push down a bit, looks like he might be sucking air instead of chicken broth. Fortunately for all of you, I don't listen to him very often or the planet would be crisped several times over by now.

The difference between killing someone and letting them die is solely in the the amount of satisfaction gained.

Once, during a high school health course, I answered the question of "What's the first thing you should do if you find a person unconscious?" with "Search his pockets for loose change."

The instructor was not amused.

I would flag down a waiter and suggest the fellow was ready for his bill.
