I'd just like to point out that I don't think the bad guys over there have read the Geneva Convention at all so it won't matter much if you're a real soldier or a mercenary when they cut your head off.

Becoming a merc is a dodgy proposition, at best. If you are able to get past the ethical questions and the moral dilemma presented by becoming basicly a hired gun, you must accept the fact that like so many Haliburton truck drivers and NYT reporters, you have 0 protection from unsavory characters outside of the side arm you will likely be carrying.
Not having been a soldier myself may cheapen the opinion, but I believe in the romantic notions of honor in life, honor in death. A mercenary tends to be one without honor. Is it worth it to make a couple extra bucks?

No grey area, you wouldn't be. Not that some group of Iraqi insurgents is going to give a fuck either way.
I'd recomend MPRI for helicopter pilot mercenatu work. They pay the best. You're checked out on UH-1's, right?

The war in Iraq is very hyped up.. unfortunately there isnt any sources that I know of that show what its really like over there. I only have my personal experience.. I will tell you right now. If i had an oppurtunity to go over there in the same capacity that you are thinking.. I would go.. I am going to see what a second tour will bring me over there with intel and see if after that i can get a good job going over there via private sector

The same status as all of the other hostages. Headless, I would imagine. What is your life worth to you? Your wife? Only you can make that call. If you live you will walk away relativly wealthy. If your caught you will probably never walk again.
