I happened upon this page after hearing rumours of a possible 2005 Selective Service Draft. Although the "proof" section is somewhat misleading (Any of you that remember your "I'm just a bill" know that a bill that sits in committee does nothing, it's pretty much dead), I'm curious to know which of you, assuming Bush was re-elected and the draft was non-gender biased (and you were U.S. Citizens, in some cases), etc, would go if called into service.

To answer the question you asked, yes I would. I'm actually also a proponent of the "2 years mandatory service" idea. Not necessarily military, but some form of government/social service should be required.

To address the specifics of the situation you posed, there are a few problems. First, I'm over the age at which people get drafted, so unless they extend it to the 35+ crowd, it's a moot point.

Second. "Bush" doesn't have a secret plan to re-enact the draft. If you take about 2 minutes to actually follow the links from the guys "proof", you'll find that the Senate Bill (S.89) was sponsored by Senator Earnest F. Hollings. The House Resolution (HR 163) was sposored by Charles B. Rangel. A quick search on Google reveals that Hollings is a Democrat and actually sought the presidential nomination for his party in 1984. Rangel is also a Democrat. He participated in the Impeachment hearings against Richard Nixon, is Chairman of the Board of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and Co-founded the Congressional Black Caucus.

You'd have to have your tinfoil hat screwed on especially tight to believe that Bush is behind this in any way...

I'd Go.

I'm Currently IN the Navy so I guess I'd already be there.

However I agree with Smash... I wouldn't like it.

I LOVE my Navy job. I got to pick it. I'm doing what I like to do most of the time. I'm getting a load of benefits for school and other things...

If I was drafted I wouldn't get ANY of that.

but I would still go.

you need to do better than that. I expect more out of you bitch. Make it something that would actually deserve a direct reply next time. This isn't amatuer hour.

You have to pay taxes
You have to register for Selective Service
You have to obey federal, state and local ordinances

There's plenty of things you have to do in the "land of freedom". Them's the breaks.

Ummm, yeah you would. Everyone gets the same bennies in the service.

I would not go.

First because, I'm too old, and too banged up from already having spent more than enough time serving Uncle Sam.

Second, because I am of the opinion that no nation has the right to defend itself by conscripting its citizens. If, when under attack, the citizens do not respond to the needs of their nation, then that nation really doesn't need to exist.

On the other hand, I don't think any citizen that refuses to serve when his nation is under attack doesn't deserve the protection of that nation that his citizenship provides.

The current war, is in no way an attack on this nation. Iraq did not, and does not pose a threat to this country. They did nothing to us, were not involved in 9/11, and should not have been invaded. War is supposed to be THE last resort, not your first option.

I was giving you a way to bow out, but fuck it!

The above statement is your only way of ever trying to weasle out of being flamed.

Oh, you can DO BETTER THAN THAT! Pahlease.

I think YOU'RE the one who's going to have to DO BETTER THAN THAT.

Obviously, it IS amateur hour, you ineffectual smudge on the petrie dish that is Kansas.

Why don't YOU bring your "A" game, huh, Stok?

Because you couldn't flame your way out of a gasoline soaked powder keg, you pathetic old fuck.

Just slink back into your shi
tty little life with your shitty little dreams of even being able to touch the hem of my boxers and shut the fuck up before I embarass you so much that your ***** shrinks into so far up into you, that not even Nicole Kidman with a fucking microscope and tweezers could find it.

That is if it isn't there already.

I would go, and fight with such ferocity and lack of compassion for the enemy that they would send me back. Nowadays they want a kinder more understanding killing machine. I'm well aware of the ramifications of pumping a dead body full of lead in a town square means a free ride home.

HOwever, serving the country or more importantly the citizens of this country by mandatory military or civil service will assist in devloping a stronger nation. One of the problems that the US faces today is the individualism that is prevelant in this country. If people where asked to serve others in a capacity stated above a sense of cultural, national, and social pride can be restored. Not only those aspects but service will also help build discipline and self respect. These are just a few of the benefits that mandatory service would provide. This mandatory service should also provide benefits such as free attendance at state junior colleges or some other result.
