I happened upon this page after hearing rumours of a possible 2005 Selective Service Draft. Although the "proof" section is somewhat misleading (Any of you that remember your "I'm just a bill" know that a bill that sits in committee does nothing, it's pretty much dead), I'm curious to know which of you, assuming Bush was re-elected and the draft was non-gender biased (and you were U.S. Citizens, in some cases), etc, would go if called into service.

I wouldn't.

I would, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

There seem to be plenty of rebels out there in our generation. They just don't have a cohesive nucleus of issues that they agree on. So, while I know lots of people who rebel in one way or another, they're very disparate on the very issues they rebel on.

Personally, my reason to go would be out of a desire to serve my country. I would have joined up with the military probably in high school, but I was afraid they'd turn me into one of those people who makes their bed every day. Or kick me out over bed-making.

I am now, and always have been, in favor of compulsory national service. I believe that on reaching 18, or graduating from high school, 2 years of service, either military or civil, should be required before allowing a person to move on to college or the workforce. I would go.

But I don't have to worry about it. I am physically unfit for military service.

I doubt they'd be calling up single fathers in their 30's as a first choice, anyway.

Back in the day, I'd have gone. I remember my mom freaking out during the Gulf War as I was just hitting 18 in a couple months and had to fill out Selective Service when applying to colleges. She was literally on the verge of trying to locate relatives in Canada or something when I told her that, while obviously I'd rather not go and get shot at, I'd still go if I was called upon because I felt it was one of my obligations as a citizen. Still feel much the same way except now I have another life to tend to beyond my own and I think I'm doing better here at home than the minimal contribution I could make in the field. Trust me... you wouldn't want an army composed out of me Smiley: grin

I actually agree with you, but only if the "reserves" as it were were kept in defense of the homeland itself or maybe sent out via a bona fide Congressional Act of War. None of this calling up random citizens and keeping them in the desert for an undetermined period of time stuff.

Yeah like having unprotected sex and using whatever drug they could get their hands on. And while stoned being indoctrinated with communist propaganda while the media was content to chastise McCarthy for correctly recognizing the threat to human individuality that communism and socialism in general brings with it.

We are in the information age...Regardless of political or religious preferences we have the ability, with the touch of a keyboard, to research and inquire in greater depths what the mass media was content to allow us specific soundbyte and party line info. We are openly having this discussion over great distances instantly, not only that but if you disagree with me you can choose to use numerous sources to try and persuade me to your side, and vice versa. With this type of freedom we have a duty to actively search for the truth.

I'd go. And being a teenager still, should this draft go forward, I just might actually be drafted. Yikes!

Well since I live in Canada I am never going to be drafted...

I don't think I would go.

I would go if called, but, four years of service in the Marines have rendered me, to the best of my knowledge, physically ineligible for military service.

Ironically, about a week after I had enlisted into the navy (back in 1990) I received my notification that I was no longer eligible for the draft.

Anyhoo, I did my tour of duty and was honorably discharged in '94. If I had to do it over again, I would have gone Coast Guard.

Did they call you "pops" during basic training? Or whatever the Navy equivilent is, waterslides and ice cream parties, I've heard.

Viva Starship Troopers!

I'd go. Although, I must say, anyone giving me a weapon and more training should really take a look at my psychological profile before hand.
