In a democracy, the commander in chief works for you. You hire him when you elect him. You watch him do the job. If he makes good decisions and serves your interests, you rehire him. If he doesn't, you fire him by voting for his opponent in the next election.

Not every country works this way. In some countries, the commander in chief builds a propaganda apparatus that equates him with the military and the nation. If you object that he's making bad decisions and disserving the national interest, you're accused of weakening the nation, undermining its security, sabotaging the commander in chief, and serving a foreign power—the very charges Miller leveled tonight against Bush's critics.

Are you prepared to become one of those countries?

Then you can't get very far writing slanted material, can you?

The jingoistic right has been saying since 9/11 that if you disagree with Bush, you hate America, hate our troops, want our boys to die and pinko Muslim communist ***** to take over the world, etc. Mr. Saletan is saying what everyone else has been saying for year: if citizens are not allowed to express their unhappiness with their elected officals, then democracy itself is at risk.

Neither side is anything new.

What part of that was false?

The jingoistic right (by which I don't mean all Republicans in the country) have been using the "What? You think Bush was wrong to [do this]? So I guess you just love Saddam and want our troops to be defeated so you can say you were right! Why don't you move to France you spineless weakling while us real men fight for freedom!" any time Bush's capabilities or motives are questioned.

Likewise, others (mainly on the left) have been looking at the right and saying "WTF? Can you talk about the issues without wrapping a flag around yourself and chanting 'You hate America!'?"

Regardless of whether you believe the right is wrong to say what they do as a response to criticism or whether you believe that they have just as much right to say it as the Left does their piece, you really can't deny that the same drama's been going on for three years now.

Oh, for f'uck's sake, Jophiel. You know precisely what I was referring to, and that was funny, damnit. See how often I try to be amusing in the morning any more. Now you got me all butt hurt for entirely missing the point.

I am now back in my cubicle, staring blankly at my monitor in the process of ingesting 6 shots of espresso.

Carry on.

I expect a little tongue after this, but I respect you more than most of the liberals here, Joph.

I've never questioned, bush. I've had some questionable bush in my early twenties, but that's another story completely.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

- Theodore Roosevelt
