Try 'Lieutenant', ***

As for pronunciation, no-one pronounced it that way til the 1900s when, no doubt through the vagaries of a syphillitic in-bred retired Colonel (pronounced 'Ker-Mit'), the brits decided to shag up their own language further.

no i think you'll find we improved it and nobody else followed, just like everybody else drives on the wrong side of the road.

Trust me, you'll be disappointed and flaccid from buyer' remorse, Nobby. A RACK is as good or better than multiple male orgasms, pheromone attractants, and cold hard cash-- and thrice as effective and gratifying!

So it's not pronounced "lew-ten-nant"? I get confused with all this military rank crap. Is it for the same reason that "colonel" is pronounced "kernel"?

Only in Britain ~ we don't know any better.

While many brits assault the USA for butchering the language, it's often the reverse. Many (not all) differences between British English and American English are because we changed in the 20th Century and the USA held onto traditional spellings and pronunciations.

(We used to say Tom8to, not Tom'aa'to, 'gotten' not 'got' etc.)

And taking advice from Dracoid is like asking Varus for an impartial perspective.

Hm...if that's the case, I think we should designate Ebonics as "Middle-American". Fo'sho'.
