I know NPR is a flaming liberal station regarding their political point of view but aside from that what classical music do you like and wish they would play more of?

I like Gershwin and Korsikov...

They should play more Mozart, Handel, and Bach. And cut all programming for modern or abstract classical music.

I humbly admit that I'm a heathen when it comes to classical music, but I listen to it throughout the day here - They play a wide variety, including classical music from movies and some opera. Since it's broadcast from England, I enjoy hearing their news and commentary.

Hell, I even enjoy the commercials. There is a banking commercial series that is very funny - listen to the station long enough and I'm sure you'll hear it in a couple of hours (if not hourly)).

Oh, and move "Lake Woebegone" to 3 AM on Sunday mornings so it doesn't fill up prime listening hours on the weekends. That has got to be one of the dumbest radio shows ever.

Hmm, here are some of my faves:

Eric Satie
Claude Debussy
Igor Stravinsky
Camille Saint Saens
Rimsky-Korsikov
Mozart

For opera I'm a sucker for Puccini.

I particularly dislike Copeland's works. His is the cacophony of dissonant chords and and jazz-like melodies which epitomizes why I don't enjoy modern classical music.

Being a major music geek, I have found that digging into classical music is a pretty daunting task.

I have figured out a few things over the years that have helped a ton. If you hear a piece on whatever classical music service that radio will feed you, it's probably not anywhere near an optimum performance. Find out the composer and title of the piece and do a little homework to find out what is generally considered "the classic/standard" performance of the piece. It's so rarely the one that the radio will play. The radio fed choices seem to be the ones that best fit into background noise. Basically they pick the safest, least expressive performances of the material that they can find.

Just as an example, you will never hear Stravinsky's early 60's performances of his own material on NPR. What you will hear are watered down performances that are safer as background noise in an office environment.

I think it's horrible that classical music stations pick performances so badly. It's hard to turn someone on to classical music when all they have been exposed to are watered down performances on radio. It's even harder to get someone excited about classical music if they have made the mistake of purchasing the plethora of crap put out by the 3 for $5 lables (Laserlight, et al) that many corporate chains stock heavily as their classical music selection. The putrid performances these companies release will just scare people off the genre completely.

Classical music is NOT boring...but the performances that most people are introduced to the genre with are. People would probably call The Beatles pretty damn boring if they could only hear the 101 Strings musak-like renditions.

ok....rant done :)

I knew I'd forget someone. Thanks for the reminder, Totem.

I like Copeland a lot too.

I am more a fan of opera than "classical music". I enjoy Verdi, Puccini and Wagner (yes. sometimes it's good to be heavy handed. It's the fascist side of me.)

I listen to a little classical. I fell in love with Vivaldi's "4 Seasons" and other pieces. Bach and Beethoven, Strauss, and the Braveheart soundtrack are others that I like. Oh, and Loreena McKennitt gets a lot of playtime too. (this is on a Shoutcast classical stream)
I need to make a CD for work since I can't get anything through the goddam firewall here.

Classic FM's OK for short car journeys etc., but I get frustrated at popular stations playing 'highlights' of major works. To me it feels like a station that only plays the verses of songs and edits out the chorus.
When I have time I'd rather hear complete works.

No real single favourite; anything from Vivaldi to Kopecky.

If you haven't already, check out Jaz Coleman. Lead singer with british Punk Band 'Killing Joke Going since '79 - Dave Grohl's just joined them on drums)', he's also a significant classical composer and been conductor of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra.

Q: What's the difference between a Viola and a Violin?
A: A Viola burns for much longer.
