Hey Illia, I'm moving to Calgary at the beginning of November, if you could answer a couple questions that'd be rad.

#1 What is there to do for an early 20's couple?

#2 How likely is it to find a f/t or p/t job paying more than minimum wage?

#3 Any suggestions on somewhere to live? I've been told to stay away from NE and SE. My girlfriend will be working in SW, so somewhere near there is a priority.

#4 Basically are there any tips to the city that you might have for me?

Thank ya kindly.

I was debating whether to put this in Asylum or Sandbox and in the end just said **** it I'll throw it up here for Illia and the vultures :p

We've got some pretty good bars around. Depends what you're into, but music scene wise, the local folk seem trapped in the early 90's punkish thing. The good news is they're really good at it now after doing it for so long.

Mostly, to me Calgary == Mountains. We're an hour from some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. If you enjoy biking, skiiing, or walking, doing it in the mountains is lovely.

Very, depends on qualifications of course, but it's generally pretty easy to find something in cubicle hell here. Oil industry is good for jobs.

Anywhere near downtown. You're better off being in walking distance of stuff (especially the bars, see above), the core of the city is small but then mushrooms into a mass of "look we just unpacked this place". Most of the 'burbs are lacking transport.

Learn to love the mountains. Live near a good pub. Live near downtown. I'm not sure what else to offer. What brings you two here?

And do let me know when you come out. I'll take you out for drinks.

Not to much into bars/clubs myself, girlfriend is though and I suspect I'll be pulled along to a handful. Pubs I can handle though. I love hiking etc, so the mountains sound good.

Really glad to hear that. She's already got a job lined up, I'm the only one that'll be looking.

Yeah, I've heard that if you live close enough, that walking is the only way to go. Looking into townhouses or suites myself, while girlfriend is looking at towering apartments. I'm hoping I win in the end ;)

I've got the mountain loving part down already, so I'll just have to work on the other two.
My better half was offered the chance to move there and train new employees when their new restaraunt opens up in Novemberish. She decided that she'd enjoy it, and since I wasn't going to be having any of that long distance crap, I figured I'd move with her. Plus I figure I've lived in the same place for a good 18 years or so, and while I love it here I could use the change.

And do let me know when you come out. I'll take you out for drinks.

Will do, thanks again for the answers ;)
(Some of those are amazing pictures by the way!)

Hey, Illa. I'm not sure who Heather is, but she's practially a twin of my wife. It was a little disturbing, it was like looking at pictures of her with some random child.

You obviously have impeccable taste in women, Smash. Heather's the woman I'm in love with.

What, no plans for kids yet?

Alberta, in general, is great for golf. There are lots of nice inexpensive courses and some really nice expensive ones like Kananaskis.

I think another bonus of Calgary is you are a reasonable drive from the BC interior. Check out Kelowna and Vernon, and all the lakes in the area. Kelowna is one of the few places in the world where you could go skiing in the morning, and play a round of golf in the afternoon.

I live in Vernon right now, have for 18 years now. Not quite my whole life, but close enough I suppose. I'm not much a fan of Kelowna though except for the mall, and only cause Vernon's got **** for shopping. Went looking for a pair of pants today and couldn't find anything.
I love it here though, if I were able I'd stick around for a good many years.

*Edit - Plus I think that sentence about the skiing and golf would work better with Vernon in place of Kelowna. I can't off the top of my head think of a ski "resort" in Kelowna, whereas Vernon has Silver Star.

Woops, well I guess you would know better than me, I think of Vernon and Kelowna as basically the same place. They're not even an hour apart are they? I say Kelowna too, because it is sort of the main city in the Okanagan. Anyway, you will miss home once you move to Calgary, me thinks. What does a 1800 sq ft, 2 story house go for in Vernon, in a nice area? I work overseas, so it doesn't really matter where I live, I have often thought it would be nice to go to that area.
