I believe this is because Baltimore is the heroin capital of the US. Or was it the crack capital? Whatever it is, Baltimore has a reputation of being a junkie haven.

Heh. You have no idea. The city motto used to be the City that Reads! But the literacy rate is so atrocious they had to change it to the Greatest City in America of some nonsense like that.

Sounds about right.

HIV and AIDS is a large epidemic in Baltimore City. The statistics are outrageous.

Good thing they quoted those outrageous statistics. This is all baloney. Baltimore has the third highest infection rates, not the first as the group in this article claims. NYC and Miami are numbers one and two, respectively.

I went and looked them up because I know the AIDS infection rate amongst adults in certain African countries hovers at just under 40%, which is outrageous.

http://www.avert.org/subaadults.htm

In Baltimore the worst statistic I could find was 0.5% infection. Not five percent, one-half of a percentage point.

http://www.dhmh.state.md.us/AIDS/epictr.htm

For those who think this is a gay problem...

Until recently 50% of the cases were caused by injection.

Homosexual transmission occurs at less than half the rate of heterosexual transmission of the virus. The transmission amongst homosexual males though, is overwhelmingly African American, above eighty percent. 2002 found heterosexual transmission accounting for more cases than intravenous drug use.

Prince George's County and Baltimore City make up nearly 2/3 of the total cases, Baltimore itself almost 1/2 of the cases. And yes, the percentage of cases in Baltimore has actually increased, but the number of AIDS cases statewide has not. The number of cases has decreased statewide, including Baltimore.

The number of infections and infection rates were the highest during the early nineties. The actual number of infections has decreased across the board with the sole exception of heterosexual transmission.

Current trends indicate the number of total infections will decrease, with heterosexual the predominant form of infection.

Laurel isn't that bad. I was living right on the edge of PG a couple years ago, in White Oak (technically Montgomery county by like half a mile). Had to be the crack capital of atleast Maryland. A couple people got shot in front of a 7-11 across the street of where I was working at the time not long after I went home. Not the safest neighborhood.

I grew up in Montpelier, which isn't technically part of laurel, but that's what letters to it are marked as.

Columbia seems like Laurel, only the drivers are bigger ******** and people are richer. These seem to go together often.

Work in Columbia, live up in Westminster (a.k.a., Hooterville) after living past 9 years in San Francisco, CA. I was born in Washington DC and grew up in Montgomery Village/Gaithersburg, MD.

I came back for the better job market and slightly more affordable housing market as compared to San Francisco and Northern California.

Anyhoo, nice to be back in Maryland. Taking the wife down to Baltimore for the Baltimore Comic-Con in a few weeks on Sunday, the 12th. We'll be sure not to step on any needles as we head to the convention center!

Commutes not too bad, compared to the San Francisco to Sunnyvale/San Jose commute (avg 1 to 1.5 hour commute) - usually 40 minutes door-to-door, however had to add another 10 minutes to it now that my wife started working near the Univ. of MD - Baltimore campus (we only have one car, for now). After we build up some equity, we'll try to move in a little closer in-between Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Sourcefire, a network security software company - the founder and CTO is the creator of Snort, an open source program (network intrusion detection stuff). I'm a technical writer there. Great folks, great boss - the learning curve has been pretty difficult, but I'm learning as much as I can until my brain gets full for the day. This is an area of technology I haven't written much about - I've started taking some CBT courses at techies.com to ramp me up faster on Networking.

Smoggy. You missed out the bit about your strange Uncle baby-sitting you on your 11th birthday.

If you're going to give us your life story we want details. Sordid details!

I was told by the family to never speak of the 11th birthday party episode that involved my Uncle Floyd...he was a barber in a small town in the south, think it was Mayberry...yeah, Mayberry....

The sordid details will come out in my biography - including the drunken high school years, the drunken college years, the wild & crazy college sexcapades, the drunken navy years (chicks digged the uniform, yowza!), the wild & crazy navy sexcapades, the drunken NYC years, the drunken San Francisco years, the wild & crazy San Francisco sexcapades, the tech boom making huge bucks, the tech bust when I found myself unemployed for almost 2 years, and then...well, don't wanna give away the ending!
