TRENTON, N.J. (AP) In a stunning declaration, Gov. James E. McGreevey announced his resignation Thursday and acknowledged that he had an extramarital affair with another man. ''My truth is that I am a gay American,'' he said.

''Shamefully, I engaged in adult consensual affairs with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony,'' the married father of two said. ''It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexecusable.''

The Democrat said his resignation would be effective Nov. 15.

McGreevey said he would step down because his secret both his sexuality and his affair leaves the governor's office vulnerable.

Kudos to NJ for the nations first Gay Govenor though.

Yep, now its time for the rest of the democratic party to come out of the proverbial closet. ~grin~

What an idiot. I could care less, except for the fact that he was married. I think his wife should have dibs on what they do to him.

You're losing it Smash!

I suspect you mean the nations first openly Gay Govenor

We have several openly gay Members of Parliament, and ironically, the first to 'come out' was a Conservative.

Would a male Governor that had an extramarital affair with a woman be forced to step down?

What difference does it make if he's fucking a man or a woman?

If he was, he would never had admitted it, the story never would have been printed, and there would have been a dead gay man found at the turnpike.

BIG RED TRUCK!

He's the governor of new jersey what do you expect. Also I think it's rather telling that all the major news sources neglected to mention he was democrat...well except for one reference on fox and one on the drudge report. Granted I havn't had a chance to read the globe yet.

That's where I read the sotry and his political affiliation was mentioned in the first sentence.

Anyway, he cited his reason for the resignation as:

Quote:
"Given the circumstances surrounding the affair and its likely impact upon my family and my ability to govern, I have decided the right course of action is to resign,"

In other words, certain people would refuse to let this die if he stayed in office, so he'd rather steal their thunder by resigning. This way, in 3 years, he can stand proudly for election as an ex-governor run out of office by gay-bashers. Anyone who hounds him then on the issue of his infidelity will automatically be labeled as a bigot. That's my take on it.

Great. This makes New Jersey the smelly, gay younger brother to an embarassed New York.

Considering Connecticuit just lost their governor to scandal earlier this year, I wonder if Pataki is going to show up in drag with a crack-pipe sometime soon...

For those of you NOT paying attention to this story, his resignation had a lot more to do with stupid decisions than the fact that he was gay...
He appointed an un-qualified "friend" to lead the homeland security office in NJ. This was a dumb decision that could have been made by a straight man/woman. His sexual orientation was about to be used for extortion (presumably by said "friend").

A straight man being extorted by an ex-lover, for being dumb enough to exchange political favors for sexual ones would be in the same position.

He did the right thing by resigning, but that does not make him perfect. His actions that lead up to this have to be considered too. He's human, he fecked up, fessed up, and now he's gonna live with it.

If anything, it was thought that a series of fundraising scandals involving McGreevey associates might force the Democratic governor to resign or doom his bid for a second term. -- Chicago Tribune

"And so, my truth is that I am a gay American," the Democrat said. -- CNN.com

If there's a liberal media attempt to hide his party affiliation, I'm not seeing it.

I don't flip to the "big 3", but each time I saw a sound-bite clip from his speech, CNN had his name with a (D) beside it below the video. Most of us kinda figure the (D) stands for Democrat...

According to your link this is the first sentence

Quote:
TRENTON, N.J. -- State Republicans on Friday said Gov. James E. McGreevey should step aside immediately, one day after the governor revealed he is gay, had an extramarital affair and will resign in November.

Now where does it say democrat governor McGreevey? Not only that but go on to read the entire article and not once do they directly refer to him being a democrat.

This is the kind of sources you guys are using...
