I'm not the one making sweeping generalizations. You do it. Besides, what else do you have to do except amuse me?

If I had my way, we'd only talk about culture on this board.

I hate politics.

I dunno, last time I was there my friend got mugged, then I saw a kid get hit in the head with a bottle while some other kids stole his bike.

How come Pollock paints all squiggly like that?

Why is Wagner sung in German, can't they just translate it to English?

I don't understand why Kubrik doesn't move the camera around more!

Better.

I was more thinking about newer things, but OK. That's a start.

Oh and I got your inference that'd it'd be all shallow.

Roger Waters is bringing "The Wall" to Broadway.

Someone needs to sit him down and say "Ok, fucking let it go. Gilmour stole your band, your a genius, whatever. It's OVER. I liestened to the solo albums, you're not fooling anyone."

I'll go you one better and say that everything that Floyd did was wrung out of the bitter psyche of Syd Barrett. I don't even bother listening to anything after Metal and frankly the rest of the guys sicken me.

Okay getting back to education for a minute... throwing money at the problem doesn't really solve much until the basics are in place.

What are the basics? Glad you asked.

1. Parental involvement. If the parents aren't behind the effort, it's going nowhere. If there are no parents (nod to Smash's orphans), then the legal guardians. Someone needs to be on the home front giving a damn when a kid is having problems in school, causing problems in school, or missing from school.

2. Teachers who know and like the subject matter. My high school physics teacher worked on the Manhattan project; she lived and breathed physics. My American Lit teacher was a publishd authority in her field. Enthusiastic teachers make all the difference in motivating kids, because the important thing is not to teach kids facts. The important thing is to teach them to think, and to show them that the subject matter is worthy of thought.

If you have those two factors in place, you can make do with a tent and a chalk board. If they're not in place all the overpriced computer labs in the world won't help.

And the most do. The people paying for an Escalade and FUBU gear with welfare is an urban legend, a boogie man. Those guys are sellin' dope or pimpin' hos. Real people LIVING on welfare do not have it like that. You'll still be eating chicken while they have pork n' beans.

Back up there johnny, if you are going to quote me, then at least respond to what I wrote and not some another poster. When did I say anything about Escalades and FUBU?

True enough. I used Moebs words on you. But the point I was trying to make was that so very few people would accept that free ride. People want better in life, the people you claim would just be content to live on the public teat just don't exist in large numbers if at all. And if they did are you saying that you would spite the 19,995 that are trying to get ahead just to make sure the 5 don't skate by?

Ok I posted three quotes up above yours, now for the sake of arguement why don't you associate your comments with the appropriate quote, that way everyone will know who you are responding to and why. Because implying that I said something that didn't is not nice. :)

And if they did are you saying that you would spite the 19,995 that are trying to get ahead just to make sure the 5 don't skate by?

I don't recall ever saying I would spite anyone, what the reference was that anyone living at the base level of government sponsorship needs to be an active participant in society. Performing a function that benefits others, not everyone but others in their community. Is that too much to ask if the people that are paying the taxes are going to support everyone? The free riders need to be flushed out and given bus fare to Canada.

All this Parental Involvement stuff would be great if it weren't for the fact that my high school (which is a boarding school) has virtually no parental involvment at all, most of them are thousands of miles away and many never visit the campus, but a ton of money.

Our average SAT score was 1590.

Boarding or Private schools are VASTLY different from public schools in many ways. The need for parental involvement being one of those differences.
