Tax Cuts for the PeopleFollow

#1 Aug 09 2004 at 1:41 PM Rating: Decent
Many of you have derided the Bush tax cuts as being for the rich, to which I adamanatly disagree.

Quote:
"These are the basic ideas that guide my tax policy: lower income taxes for all, with the greatest help for those most in need. Everyone who pays income taxes benefits — while the highest percentage tax cuts go to the lowest income Americans. I believe this is a formula for continuing the prosperity we've enjoyed, but also expanding it in ways we have yet to discover. It is an economics of inclusion. It is the agenda of a government that knows its limits and shows its heart."
— President George W. Bush

Quote:
Under the President’s tax relief plan, the typical American family of four will be able to keep at least $1,600 more of their own money.

So if the avg family of 4 receives at least 1600 of their own money how can this not be a good thing? My mortgage payment is right at 600 a month on a 90k house. Even if I only receive 1200 in tax cuts that's two full mortgage payments. Again how can this be a bad thing? And what would be a fair and just alternative?

It's simple, Varus.

Those quotes are (in order) a generalization and a lie.

No one has a problem with tax cuts for the middle class.

I think I could probably get 90k for my poolhouse.

The problem is when I get a $25,000 tax cut and moreso when Bill Gates gets millions in a tax cut.

The traditional Liberal argument. The rich have more, so we should take more of their money. Damn the successful! It's the lazy bastards who deserve the freebies!

I was thinking the same. For someone who goes on about how he's a self made man, 90k around here would buy you tree fort.

I'm still pressing my "Everyone gives Jophiel one penny a year" tax plan. Whichever candidate pushes that will get my vote.

Unless the other is pushing my Irène Jacob platform

The people who benefit from a competetive society where the vast majorty of the advantages that lead to sucess are based simple no which familty you're born into have an obligation to support those who suffer under the same system.

Simple basic fairness.

I have an obligation to support people like you, even when you cote against your best finicial intrest to give me a massive tax cut I don't need, aren't going to spend, and particularly when the government spends more than any time in history.

That's ignorant logic.

How is getting taxed less getting something for free?

And let examine what is SUCCESSFUL? Making money from the sweat of someone else's brow?

What kind of Horatio Alger-addled world are you from? Self-made people are the exceptions to the rule. Most rich people are living off their ancestors lies and back room deals. This american dream crap is just that.

And you buy it?!?! I thought you were smarter than that.

You have to understnad the character of someone making $50k a year who votes for tax cuts for the wealthy. It increases their self esteem by making them feel part of a world they've failed to find a way into.

By advocating for the rich, they assosiate themselves with them and further cement the fantasy that some day they will be them.

Then they die penniless and insane in a run down medicare funded nursing home.

Sure there are.

People win the lottery, too. Maybe we should cut the prices on lottery tickets to give the poor a better chance.

Why is this a problem? I don't begrudge people that are making, or have inherited, money I don't have. I'm not wealthy but I know that if I work hard, don't break the law, and stay consistent I will become wealthy. When I attain that goal I wouldn't want the government in essence telling me I made too much so they're going to take a big chunk of it from me to give to other more deserving citizens.

Yes my house is only valued at 90k...of course I am self-employeed and have yet to hit 30. While this is my first house it won't be my last and with the accumulation of wealth I dread running into the serious tax problems that my father encountered after creating a business that had 15offices and over 50 employees. Which due to lawsuit abuse, like employess suing him for firing them for not showing up for work, and numerous other types of lawsuits forced him to sell his business and retire at 40.

My point is why would I want to work so hard to create a huge amount of wealth only to have the government take close to 50% of it?

That's the problem.

If you work hard, don't break the law, and stay consistent you'll end up massively in debt.

Erm, so you could be proud of the way your country treats the old, the sick and the disadvantaged and the way it protects its citizens from crime and terrorism?

Naw. Strike that. Stoopid idea.

That's wonderfull. Of course it doesn't help me out much when all of the jobs have been shipped offshore, I cant afford decent healthcare, and gas cost me $3.00 a gallon.

So because you feel guilty for achieving a high lvl of wealth you believe it to be the "obligation" of anyone that has achieved a similar lvl to pay 50% of their earnings to taxes. Do you realize that this effectively amounts to you working for the federal government for 6months w/o compensation? Is this the kind of logic current and prior federal employess have?

If you really feel guilty about having earned so much why not just take another 25% of your yearly earnings and head on down to the local soup kitchen or Ymca and drop off 25% of your earnings to the people running those places.

How much more could you miss the point? Taxing the rich disproportionately discourages the accumulation of wealth, discourages success. Especially when the reason they are getting taxed so disproportionately is so that lazy crackheads and ghetto bastards can have welfare and medic-aid.

And Smash, show me how you support people like me.

I have an idea learn a new job skill that is of value to an employer, or better yet start a business of your own. Of course this may mean spending 60hrs a week working but that's the price of success. Then when you succeed you can take that money and pay for your own social services instead of stealing someone elses because "your job got shipped offshore".

I don't feel "guilty" about anything. If I play in a Poker tounrnament and win, I'll but the loosers drinks.

Also what you apparently fail to understand about the graduated income tax system is that you only pay a higher rate on income above a certain threshold.

So the first $200k or whatever is taxed at a lower rate.

The logic is very simple. People who earn more should pay for more government services.

In point of fact, people who have more should pay more, but that's not how it's structured at the moemnt. I could have no income for a year and thus pay no taxes, and still have 100 times the net worth of someone who pays taxes.

Does that strike you as fair?

It's not about giult, it's about basic fairness.

When will you people learn that life isn't fair? Taking more from someone just because they have it is not right. It is not morally justifiable. It is the reprehensible action of a caste jealous of the success of others.

I agree.

Pay for a bigger tax cut for me, will you boy? When you're done mowing my lawn, there's a good chap.

Well that sounds pretty simple. I'll just sit down and pray until "another job skill that is of value to an employer" magically appears in my head. Or I can pray until a "business of my own" magically appears in my backyard. Oh, and while I'm at it i'll just pray that I don't get sick and can work 60 hours a week until i succeed! Because, we all know only sinners, gays, and black people get sick anyway right?

Hey, heres a point! all of those things cost money. Money which people that don't have a head start at life don't have. Everyone that works 60 hours a week is a multimillionaire right? You know those people that keep Americas factories humming, the chinese.

Smash - you are obviously dealing with people that have no idea how our current income tax code works, much less the basics of a graduated tax rate.

link to tax tables...
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=109877,00.html

If you are single you pay nothing for the first $7k and then you pay 10% on the amount over $7k up to $28.4k - You don't pay the 10% on the whole $28.4k. Then you pay 15% on the amount between 28.4 and 68.8, not 15% on the whole amount. I can't believe I have to explain that...

In a nutshell, the very wealthy pay very little (especially in relation to thier income or net worth). They can live quite comfortably and offset income with the sale of investments that show a capital loss. Many big companies have organized so that they avoid taxes by locating operations "off-shore". the tax code is riddled with ways that allow one to avoid paying taxes (legally).

But that is "fair" according to Varrus and company...
