Hello I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did to solve it. Here it is...

My Dad owns a HP Pavilion desktop and when he got on today he got a message saying this "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corupt: <Windows root> system32\hal.dll"

This happened before and i had called HP they told me to do a f10 system restore off the backup partition so when this happened YET AGAIN we tried this. It didnt work.

The Computer didnt come with a xp disk so i was wondering what can i do or what you guys did. PLEASE HELP we cant afford a new computer and the HP people want us to pay for any support they give.

For the Hal.dll file missing problem do this:
1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1

4.Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file
5.Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it
6.Type exit and take out the CD ROM

The problem is the BOOT.INI file on the root of the C: drive is misconfigured.

Doesn't really help considering you don't have a disk therefore unless you can find one you can try this: http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6287-0.html?forumID=47&threadID=156056

That might have worked Justene, but HP doesn't send discs with their computers any more. They take 10GB of your partition and set it up as a restore partition. My dad made the mistake of buying an HP without consulting me. I had to go complain to HP because they didn't send a restore disc and as soon as we turned it on, everything went sour.

#1) Never waste your money on an HP (Compaq is another company to avoid!) again!
#2) Call HP again, and tell them you need a restore disc as their restore setup sucks! They should send the discs to you ASAP!
#3) Once you get them then try and repair.
#4) Backup.
#5) Reinstall the OS, because they probably screwed it up to begin with.
#6) Never waste your money on an HP.

And the moral of this story, is to never waste your money on an HP computer! ~grin~

You do realize the reason behind that is they're the same company now. I know one bought the other, not sure who's the ***** in the relationship though.

I thought it was the other way around, but same difference.

I second that. My mom bought a HP desktop PC and one of their all in one printer/fax/scanner/copier machines and both of them turned out to be pieces of ******

I told her,"Yeah, that's all the processor and memory you need to surf ebay and pay your bills."

I will never hear the end of it.

I don't know about that, I got a couple of good Compaqs back in the day. Long before they were bought by HP. HPs have been crap for awhile now.

Hmm, all i remember from the early 90's was this one friend who bought a Compaq instead of building his own like the rest of us broke kids.

Every time we went out and bught a new game for multiplay (recall when that was NOT a standard feature, anyone?), everyone else would be up and running. Phil, however, would be steadily tweaking his computer, trying to get it to run the game. The one phrase that will live forever in my mind is:

Goddamn CompaQ!

I can't count the times I heard it.

That PC was eventually defenestrated, which resulted in a $350 damage bill, a police report, and a revoked lease. Phil claims it was worth it.

The software and their business practices aren't the only things wrong with them. You should see their cheap cases. I have probably bought five or six cases since 1990, and this case has probably bled me more than any of those cases. Their small, cramped, and they don't do **** for air flow. Then when I tried to move over the components to a better case, the nice thermaltake 560w power supply I bought for my dad fried the motherboard. They changed the voltage settings on the mb so it would only work with their power supplies. I heard that dell did this, but didn't know hp had. If that doesn't tell you to build yours instead of buying them, I don't know what will!
