WASHINGTON -- A week after Senator John F. Kerry heralded his wartime experience by surrounding himself at the Democratic convention with his Vietnam ''Band of Brothers," a separate group of veterans has launched a television ad campaign and a book that questions the basis for some of Kerry's combat medals.

But yesterday, a key figure in the anti-Kerry campaign, Kerry's former commanding officer, backed off one of the key contentions. Lieutenant Commander George Elliott said in an interview that he had made a ''terrible mistake" in signing an affidavit that suggests Kerry did not deserve the Silver Star -- one of the main allegations in the book. The affidavit was given to The Boston Globe by the anti-Kerry group to justify assertions in their ad and book.

Elliott is quoted as saying that Kerry ''lied about what occurred in Vietnam . . . for example, in connection with his Silver Star, I was never informed that he had simply shot a wounded, fleeing Viet Cong in the back."

The statement refers to an episode in which Kerry killed a Viet Cong soldier who had been carrying a rocket launcher, part of a chain of events that formed the basis of his Silver Star. Over time, some Kerry critics have questioned whether the soldier posed a danger to Kerry's crew. Crew members have said Kerry's actions saved their lives.

Yesterday, reached at his home, Elliott said he regretted signing the affidavit and said he still thinks Kerry deserved the Silver Star.

''I still don't think he shot the guy in the back," Elliott said. ''It was a terrible mistake probably for me to sign the affidavit with those words. I'm the one in trouble here."

Elliott said he was no under personal or political pressure to sign the statement, but he did feel ''time pressure" from those involved in the book. ''That's no excuse," Elliott said. ''I knew it was wrong . . . In a hurry I signed it and faxed it back. That was a mistake."

Ahh I can't wait for the anti-Bush backlash as the economy continues to suck and this thing blows up.

He may as well just annaly rape Barbra on TV now, he's toast.

Who's Barbra? You want to see him rape his mother on TV? Don't you mean Laura? At least get the right woman when your foaming at the mouth. And you can't blame that on Dyslexia, just outright... oops you made a mistake.

Lets spin this to get some blood really boiling.

Could you imagine the backlash the military would have on the medals awarded to soldiers in vietnam if it was determined a Silver Star was awarded for a war crime, because it was only awarded to improve troop morale.

I have not questioned Kerry's being awarded the Silver Star in the recent discussions, only the first purple heart.

Right, just the most minor of his decorations. Not the Silver Star or the Bronze Star.

Not that you have any facts to go on, but it seemed the easiest one to attack.

I'm certain when the Republican smear machine tells you it's time to start questioning the Silver Star you'll dress up in your old white gloved fruity *** MP uniform and rush over to your keyboard to start.

Ah but the report from the boston globe reporter is a lie

Quote:
The following statement from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth is in response to an article appearing in the morning edition of the Boston Globe (“Veteran Retracts Criticism of Kerry”) which implies that one Vietnam Veteran wishes to retract an affidavit he signed regarding John Kerry’s actions during and after Kerry’s time in Vietnam. The signed affidavit can be seen below.
"Captain George Elliott describes an article appearing in today’s edition of the Boston Globe by Mike Kranish as extremely inaccurate and highly misstating his actual views. He reaffirms his statement in the current advertisement paid for by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, Captain Elliott reaffirms his affidavit [see below] in support of that advertisement, and he reaffirms his request that the ad be played.

“Additional documentation will follow. “The article by Mr. Kranish is particularly surprising given page 102 of Mr. Kranish’s own book quoting John Kerry as acknowledging that he killed a single, wounded, fleeing Viet Cong soldier whom he was afraid would turn around.

“Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has more than 250 supporters who are revealing first hand, eyewitness accounts of numerous incidents concerning John Kerry’s military service record. The organization will continue to discuss much of what John Kerry has reported as fact concerning his four-month tour of duty in Vietnam.”

drudgereport.com

Imagine that a Boston Globe writer actually lying to help Kerry save face. It can't be true we all know there's no bias in the media.

Nah I'm getting too fat to fit into that uniform. But I can start in on the Silver Star now if you want, there is enough **** on the internet to make it interesting.

In all of this discussion though, I'm beginning to believe that you think everything out of Kerry's past is 100% accurate and that the man can't do any wrong. Wow, did we have the second coming of Christ and I missed it? Kerry is not the Saviour you think he is Smash, he is an elitist socialite that wouldn't know anything about being a Middle Class American unless some crony of his told him. Much like you.

No, I'm starting to think that you can't tell the diffrence between real questions about someone's past and politically motivated fabrications.

I never realized what a gullable ******* you were.

Thanks again for the tax cuts, I guess. I'll buy an extra case of Chamaigne when your store goes under because this administration kills small buisness with taxes again while Exxon pays nothing.

What's a real question about his past Smash? How much dope he smoked in Vietnam? Or how much Coke GWB snorted if he snorted any?

What's worse running this country? A reformed alcholic or a reformed druggie?

Why did Kerry divorce his first wife? Because of Jane Fonda? What is the sealed information in his divorce record of Julie Thorne?

Why did he throw his medals over the fence of the White House? Wasn't he proud of his actions in Nam?

I mean there is plenty of things to discuss to "smear" him, should we go there?

Personally, neither would be concerns for me.

The problem with Bush is that he snorted Coke, but supports long mandatory sentaces for possesion...of coke.

What's worse running this country? A reformed alcholic or a reformed druggie?

Bush is pretty clearly both.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that when a politician refuses to state that he didn't do a particular drug, that he did it.

Kerry's on the record saying he smoked pot. Bush refuses to answer the question.

Why did Kerry divorce his first wife? Because of Jane Fonda? What is the sealed information in his divorce record of Julie Thorne?

Let me honestly say that I have no idea at all.

I know nothing about the divorce. Didn't strike me as importnat unless he whacked her around, which I imagine we would have heard about by now.

Why did he throw his medals over the fence of the White House? Wasn't he proud of his actions in Nam?

Clearly he felt that the war was wrong and the very act of awarding people decorations for engaging in something that was wrong was hypocritical.

That doesn't dimiinish the actions he took to earn them.

I mean there is plenty of things to discuss to "smear" him, should we go there?

I don't have any problem at all with you or anyone else raising real issues based in fact about Kerry. I have a problem when you accept created issues as fact blindly.

Bring up any real issues you want.

Becuase he is a recovering alcoholic, who used his daddy's influence and position to get into the national guard so that he could fly jets, he ran several companies into the ground while at the helm he owned the Texas Rangers, it is claimed that he used cocaine and refused to take a physical in the NG because of it. Let's see? What else do want to know? Oh I know he is a very devout Christian who is not afraid for the the world to know, He is pro capital punishment, he's fluent in Spanish, he is against federal funding for stem cell research, he wants to provide amnesty to illegal immigrants that are working in the United States so that he can get the Hispanic Vote.

Bush is insisting that North Korea completely, verifiably, and irreversibly dismantle its nuclear programs.

Bush has consistently brought these threats to the attention of international organizations. He's using all means of diplomacy to answer the threat and is calling upon the world to confront these dangers, and to end them.

He's taking the region to task and having 6 way talks with North Korea, when North Korea is demanding a non agression treaty from the US, when one is not needed.

The US tried appeasement in the 1990's and it did not work, they continued to build their nuke program. The Bush Administration is not playing to North Korea's tune.

But places that didn't have WMD (so far) get invaded (more then likely for oil). Yet places that we KNOW to have WMD, get the diplomacy?
#23 Aug 06 2004 at 7:40 PM Rating: Good
North Korea has not been shooting at our planes since the Armistice was signed in 1953, where as Saddam continued to do so for 10 years. North Korea has not used WMD on it's own citizens, they are only letting them Starve. North Korea did not have 18 UN Resolutions telling them to show proof that all of their WMD was destroyed or accounted for and refused to let UN Inspectors properly do thier jobs. North Korea is also held in check by China, Russia, South Korea, Japan and the US. There is still a possibility that the issues can be resolved diplomatically with North Korea, they are at least sitting down at the table, where as Saddam would not talk.

There is still hope.

Remember we where still being shot at by Iraq, before the invasion, but some people don't like to bring that up.

Quote:

Iraq had them, they just don't have the stock piles of Nukes that people are saying they had. We had no humint on the ground in Iraq to verify the facts, that was a mistake in determining the reliability of the WMD.

Then please explain why the US has announced that it will oppose provisions for inspections and verification as part of an international treaty to ban production of nuclear weapons materials.

The US move has virtually killed a 10 year international effort to persuade countries such as India, Israel, Iran, Pakistan and North Korea to accept some oversight of their nuclear production programs.

This announcement was made in Geneva last week at the UN Conference on Disarmament which was attended by 66 countries.

The Bush administration is doing nothing while N Korea openly threatens us with attack on multiple occasions, did nothing while a experimental nuclear program moved to making weapons grade material and will do nothing going forward.

It's over, it's too late. North Korea wins with the help of the Bush administration.

The first terrorist nuclear device is going to come from North Korea or Pakistan, probably North Korea.

That's clearly not as important as creating an unstable haven for terrorists in the middle east, though.

I would hate to find this next statement to be true, but it would probably come from Iran not NK or Pak.

Iran is still an issue to be taken care of in the Middle East. BTW you never did answer my question about Iran.
