So, for about the last month I'd been having some stomach pains pretty consistantly. Sometimes better, sometimes worse but almost always there and not seemingly dependant upon whether I was eating, sleeping, sitting, etc. Incidently, this led to the same conversation with about five different people.

Them: What's wrong?
Me: I've been having this pain right here for about a month.
Them: What is that there? Your appendix? Or maybe your gall bladder? Do you think it's your gall bladder?
Me: Yeah, they didn't really cover that when I was in college taking Studio Oil Painting 350.

So off I went to see a docotr who poked at me and prodded me and asked me questions about my bowel movements and finally decided that he thinks I have an ulcer. Then he gave me a prescription for Nexium and sent me away with a reminder to check back in a month.

So, anyway, normally I'd blame my work for giving me an ulcer. But then it occured to me that all I do at work is read you idiots babbling so I've decided to blame all of you. Alla, my lawyer will be contacting you shortly Smiley: grin

As a side note, my insurance nixed the Nexium idea. So my doctor called to get them to cover some other medication and the insurance company said they'd really rather I just suffered and left them alone to count the money I keep paying them. So my trial month on Nexium has become a week a on over-the-counter Pepcid before they determine if it's helping or not and whether or not it really is an ulcer. If medication isn't helping, Plan B is to shove a camera down my throat and look around. So.. umm... Go, Plan A!

How can they nix Nexium? That's ridiculous!

It's the best medicine for GERD out there.

Alternatives?

Zantac and Prevacid are good.

I've been dealing with stomach pain for like 2 years and the only thing that fixed it was Nexium.

Also, I'd suggest not drinking coffee or dark liquor.

Seriously, hope you don't have to have your stomach looked at. I had that happen to me when I was in elementary school. I DO NOT recommend it.

Coffee seems to be my biggest vice in this but even that I don't over-do.

I do eat fast food for lunch but, for every burger or gyro I suck down, I'm eating a salad or turkey sub or something the next day. In other words, it's not like I sit around eating super spicey burritos and stuff. I can't imagine my stress level is anything astounding. Really, the doctor had no diet recommendations after I told him what I usually eat other than to be smart and not suck down packets of taco sauce or anything. I don't drink except on rare occassions and then it's usually beer, wine or maybe clear liquors like gin or vodka perhaps once or twice a year. In other words, it's somewhat perplexing to me how I'd get an ulcer but I guess it's better than finding out I have a fist sized tumor or something so I'm leaning towards hoping it's the ulcer Smiley: wink

There is one form of GERD that is caused by bacteria. They can test for that.

You don't think that your wife/child situation may be nagging at you subconsciously?

Nah, I'm all about that. It's on the back burners 'til fall and, even then, I'm not too worried. What's she going to do... not like me? Tell her friends so people I don't know five hundred miles away won't like me either? Smiley: lol

Really, I'm pretty much cool as a cucumber. 'Cept now I'm a cucumber with a hole in its stomach. So I'm cool as a cucumber with a bug larva chewing inside of it 'cause you didn't want to use chemical sprays on your garden. Can't get much cooler than that.

Hasn't your kid been with his mother for a period of time recently? Maybe that has something to do with it.

Jophed,

Consider taking a deep breath and try and resist the temptation to read any of my posts. That should fix you right up.

All right you friggin amateur psychologists... if I wanted someone's half assed opinion, I do go see a vet Smiley: grin

Seriously, everything's coming up Jophiel on my front. Having my son down with his mom for a couple months is a nice break. Ever try replacing a toilet and bathroom floor with a five year old hanging about? Or gutting his bedroom and disposing of old toys you know he'll develop a sudden affection for if he sees them en route to the trash after sitting untouched in a toybox for two years?

Jophiel,

Maybe you have an earwig in your bowel. Tell your mom you're sick and can't come to work anymore.

Hints from another sufferer:

Lay off anything with caffeine
I laid off greasy foods and anything but clear liquids for a while and that helped a LOT

Medicines that helped me:

Protonix (after a brief adjustment period of 2 days of hell)
Aciphex

Now on Zantac as my problem has become less prevalent over time.

Also, the whole endoscopy thing isn't so bad. I was laying on the bed with an IV in my arm and a small amount of dope going into my system (just enough to make me happy). I looked up at the guy and asked if he was going to give me anything good. He put in a syringue of stuff that felt kind of like a really warm metal ball rolling up my arm. Then I woke up in Wendy's with helium balloons tied to both wrists and clown makeup on my face. My cousin, who was helping me out by driving me home, overestimated my sense of good humor.

Oh shit! I take back my Nexium statement.

It was Protonix that pretty much cured me. 'Spensive tho.

Most insurances want you to take Prilosec over the counter. I would fight it and get it changed to Prevacid personally. Works just like Nexium/Prilosec. You might even talk to your doctor about Aciphex.
