I have no idea what the real story is with this Marine Hassoun, but I am amazed that CNN has been televising his ID card and Geneva Convention card all day with his social security number, name, birth date, and address on it plainly in view for anyone to steal.

The entire state of California employee payroll database was hacked a couple years back. Working at a state-funded University, I got the form letter. Called the phone number attached thereto to place the 'hold' on my account. Get a call from American Express to verify the card "I" requested over the internet nigh a month later. Sadly, that "magic" phone number - which was supposed to place a fraud protection (hold? whatever you call it) on my account - didn't.
...and to this day I still can't get rid of that darn Cat Fancy subscription!

Considering the amount of personal background checks credit card companies do on a regular basis, it's a safe bet you could do a hell of a lot more with that and a fictitious birthdate than simply having someone's power shut off.
