Having recently moved from San Francisco, CA to Westminster, MD, my cost of living has dropped significantly. My work as a contract Tech Writer in California (Silicon Valley) yearly avg. was about $90k (couple years before the crash up to 100k). My wife's job in California was $46k as an Office Administrator. Since we could never afford the size and spiffiness of the type of home we bought in Maryland while out in California, we relocated back to Maryland where I grew up.

Now I've got a "permanent" gig in Columbia, MD making $75k. My wife is job searching, but we are doing quite well on my salary alone (which bodes well if we get blessed with having a Smoggy Jr. someday). Sure, we don't make as much as we did in California, but we are sure as hell living a lot better lifestyle.

Only next time I have to remember to not buy a home with a frikkin' hill in the back yard - it's a ***** to mow since we've got to wait until the fall to buy a riding mower (they have great sales then...)

Three years ago I was unemployed and unable to find work. That’s when I became a Realtor. Couldn’t find work so I figured I'd do my own thing with that. It didn’t go as well as planned but we ate. I now have a weekly paycheck and the Realtor thing is a very well paying side job.

Things are just now picking up this year.

I'm confused. Are you saying that only those on the dole feel the need for an administration change?

How do you know what most people are struggling with as you are one of the ones here pontificating? I can only speak from my personal experience that those that I know that are struggling generally have bad habits that are costly, i.e. smoking and drinking. So it's not so much their earning potential as their habits that keep them from reaching it.

No, but he was implying that because the people that post here are well-off, that Bush must be doing A-okay.

And I was trying to state that a poll on a video game forum isn't a good representative of the economic status of the United States.

Two years ago, I was out of work for 6 months in Northern California due to the High Tech Industry crash. I found a 3- month contract gig that got us through the holidays but when it was completed, I was out of work again for another 8 months.

Northern California (Silicon Valley) is still recovering. It's not as stable a job market as the Washington DC metro area.

Sounds like your hanging out with the wrong people varrus. Maybe you should broaden your horizens. Make an attempt to find out why people are in the situations they are in, you know, straight from them. Not off of Bush's teleprompter. Get to know some other people in the world. Dating outside of the family would be a good start.

People on the dole and people who care about the people on the dole (in a way other than to say "get your asses of the dole"). Everyone else is pretty happy.

I'm a single dude from Cali. I make about 40k a year. I finished 3 years of college and then decided it wasn't for me. Now that I've seen the "real world" I have decided it is for me. I'm going to finish starting this fall. On the side, I make indpendent films. No, not ****, if it were, I'd make more than 40k a year, at least, I think I'd make good ****.

I haven't seen anyone state an income here that would qualify as "well-off". It looks like most of us (including me) fall into the paycheck to paycheck category.

Well, according to Gbaji, all the nation's poor wear brand new Nikes, watch movies on their DVD players and play the X-Box all day long instead of working. They're doing better than I am.

If it makes you feel better, this year's incentive bonuses are at a low due to the poor economy from last year. We'll see how next year goes.

On another forum, there was a thread asking if you were better, worse or the same off as you were four years ago. For every "better", there was probably two people who said worse as they has lost jobs or else found new work, but at a fraction of what they used to make. "Sames" probably equalled "Worse". So the majority were, after four years, either hanging in there or doing worse than they used to be.

I didn't say we were well off. Varus did:

You tend to hang out with people that are in your own social/financial arena. So asking people if they "know someone that's having a hard time" will often depend on their own financial situation.

Where I work I see a lot of people that need a wide variety of help. I see a group of people (we'll call them... Republicans) who don't really give a sh*t. They've got theirs and that's pretty much all they care about.

I make $40,000/year through work and some side work. I'm content with that for now because I'm pretty happy with my job. However, I do live paycheck to paycheck for the most part. That being said, if I need to have my taxes raised to provide necessary programs like health care and education, I'm all for it. I can live off a bit less. I'm not greedy.

Well it depends on the time of your life as well. 39k is a fine income for me while I am in college and in an entry-level position at that. We all have to start somewhere. Now as for those that have gotten laid off due to economical circumstances... that is a different story.

What goes up must eventually come down.

75-100k this year depending on how lazy I am and my wife will make 75k if the Republicans in power in California don't cut funding to the Junior Coleges or social services again.

But maybe I should say I barely make ends meet fliping burgers or something since I am not supposed to be able to complain about the state of the enconmy and so forth if I got mine.

Millbrae....

about 20-30 minutes south of SF by the Airport

its a pretty good price for the location.

2 minutes from bart, walking distance to Safeway, wallgreens, traderjoes, OSH, KFC, Baskin Robbins, Starbucks, plus a **** load of other places, and we are in a great school district for my fiance's daughter.....

My household consists of four mid-20s guys all working in computer/IT to some degree, renting part of a house in upper Westchester county, NY.

Those that work regularly average $30-35k per year. Some, like me, have a habit of spending several months during the summer unemployed. (I do have a new job now) And at the moment, we are down a roommate. So, it's pretty varied.
