What's the low down on IKEA?Follow

Okay, Minnesota has gotten it's first Ikea store, which is having their grand opening today. People camped in the parking lot overnight to be one of the first 100 customers so they could get a spiffy free lawn chair. The same one you can buy inside for about $7.99.

The store opening has been big news here for the past couple weeks. I drive past it going to and from work. This morning the lots were packed, with cops stationed to direct traffic.

A co-worker told me there's a woman who is essentially an IKEA groupie, going to every store opening, all across the country.

I've looked on their website and their stuff looks pretty generic and cheap. On NPR the other day they were being talked about in the same breath as Walmart, as giant retailers who are hurting communities, often while collecting large subsidies from the communities they enter.

I don't get it? What's the big deal with these stores?

Actually their stuff if very durable... it's cheap because you have to put it together. But they do have some of the coolest things you cannot find anywhere else.

I bought a couch from them 6 years ago and it's still in excellent condition.

It's crap. In the chain of people who can't afford actual furniture's shopping options it goes:

Wal-Mart, Target, Ikea, Crate and Barrel.

oh lookie another insightful post from Smash!

Anyways their stuff is not crap or else I would have not bought it. It's perfect for the young couple or if you have small spaces. From experience I have not had any problems with IKEA furniture.

I think you can get some quality items from IKEA, but there is also a lot of utter garbage.

No, really it's crap. If your a young couple, great, no one cares if your furniture is crap. That doesn't make it any better. Half of my house is still Crate and Barrel, which is also crap. The fact that you buy something because it meets your budget and your needs doesn't increase the quality of what you buy any.

Oh I have no problem with money I make plenty of it. I just hate seeing the same piece of furniture say for ten years. I would rather buy something cheap even if it does fall apart quick than buy an expensive piece of furniture that I have to look at for the next 20 years and for it to be out-dated.

Good thinking. Maybe you could use cardboard boxes for furniture. Then you could have even more variety!

I like some of the cardboard furniture out there. I would never buy it because I'd like my furniture to last but it looks semi-cool.

It's good apartment or dorm furniture. It's relatively cheap, it's relatively durable, it usually doesn't take up more space than it needs to. I don't think most of it is special and think some is way over-priced, but people seem to love it. The Chicago area is getting its second IKEA after the first one proved very popular, so someone must be liking the stuff.

Smash pretty much had it -- it's not like buying an oak bedroom set or a real cherrywood entertainment center, but it's furniture and it looks better than the stuff from the Home Living department in Wal*Mart.

I think you are going a little overboard there.

Actually I went there last weekend to get some square silver picture frames for my kitchen that I cannot seem to find anywhere else.

And they are made of pure metal so I don't how you could not get anymore durable than that.

No shit? Ikea is the only place that sells square silver picture frames? Who knew!

Or when you said "anywhere else" were you referring to the Salvation Army and 7-11?

Eh, I wouldn't lump in decorative bric-a-brac with actual furniture. I imagine IKEA is the place to be if you want an art deco wine bottle holder or a minimalist wireframe lamp.

I have a lamp and a wall clock from IKEA...I don't think I've ever gotten any actual furniture from there.

They don't really sell furniture either, they sell a lifestyle.
