Okay, Minnesota has gotten it's first Ikea store, which is having their grand opening today. People camped in the parking lot overnight to be one of the first 100 customers so they could get a spiffy free lawn chair. The same one you can buy inside for about $7.99.
The store opening has been big news here for the past couple weeks. I drive past it going to and from work. This morning the lots were packed, with cops stationed to direct traffic.
A co-worker told me there's a woman who is essentially an IKEA groupie, going to every store opening, all across the country.
I've looked on their website and their stuff looks pretty generic and cheap. On NPR the other day they were being talked about in the same breath as Walmart, as giant retailers who are hurting communities, often while collecting large subsidies from the communities they enter.
I don't get it? What's the big deal with these stores?
