People don't know good musicFollow

Alright, try this.. pick up a bass or a pair of drumsticks and play me a mudvayne song. Learn programming well enough to do a Static-X song, and get a group of 9 musicians together who all have the same mindset long enough to even cover a slipknot song.
Pick up a guitar and play me some sweeps and scales and learn advanced strumming patterns well enough to pull off Disposable Heros by Metallica. Then talk sh*t all you want. Far as i'm concerned, anyone who just hears a metal band's name and listens to it for 30 seconds, i cant give that person any credit or crediblity.

And here's something awe inspiring for you... i've heard all 4 of those bands on the radio in the last month.

Considering I'm to Music what Totem is to Black here, I'm going to field this one.

As a professional musician who's put out 2 major label albums, let me say that I hate (for the most part) metal and nu-metal and anything that tries to sound like the first Tool album, Opiate (as most of these new ****ty bands do).

It would be simple as pie to cover any of their crappy songs if I cared to. In fact, my first band ever when I WAS 15 was a metal band and YES we did cover Metallica songs (in addition to Suicidal Tendencies, Slayer...etc..).

Metal can be somewhat complex musically, but complexity is not the be-all-end-all of how to judge music. Some virtuosos simply suck (e.g. Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, anything that was featured in GFTPM...). Songwriting and timbre and thoughtful lyrics or just something DIFFERENT will turn my ear before blistering licks.

A fine example of a combination of great playing and good songs is Sonic Youth. I just saw them play on Saturday night at the Fillmore. It was probably one of the tightest live shows I have ever seen. They were consummate musicians who wove dissonance and consonance in a way no Metal band EVER will.

Metal is just for little kids or people that think like little kids. You grow out of it. An intelligent person moves on and finds something different to listen to. An intelligent person challenges their prejudices and expands their musical tastes.

As for your radio comment, who the fu
ck cares about that shit? About 90% of the best music I've ever heard will never be on the radio. Just because music is bland enough to please most of the people most of the time is not a valid measure of how good it is.

(Someone finally found a topic that I can go off on like Gbaji.)

I'll have to aggree. I'm a taxpaying, hardworking adult, who loves nothing more than to jam out to speed and death metal. while I may slightly critisize bands such as Metalica and Slipknot for their obvious change in music stlye, I will give them credit for being good musicians. I would never ever, even when i am 78 yrs old, pop in a sonic youth tape to hear some clever song bridge, that even though is technicaly good still sounds like crap to me. As for the original post only people who are insecure about themselves find ways to bash others for seemingly meaningless opinions.

I've noticed that a majority of music on the radio sucks ***.
This could be because I'm getting old....and like my parents before me... it is only natural to hate the music all of the "Kids" are listening to...

...but I think it really all just sucks.

though I still love all of the classics.... Nirvana..Operation Ivy...ect.....

If you want to know about Medicine, ask a doctor.

If you want to know about music, ask a musician.

I REPEAT:

I know you don't agree. That is but one of the reasons that you suck.

Thanks for playing, but seriously next time stick with the shit you know. Kthx.

MMMM Sonic Youth... I can't get enough of them. Their newest CD Sonic Nurse if right up there with Daydream Nation, Dirty, Washing Machine, Sister, and Experimental Jet Set.

Let nurse give you a shot.... da da da da

They way they layer their guitars and create a mood is so amazing... plus they don't give a crap.

Pulse, if they come anywhere near you. You have to go see them.

This last album is amazing when played live.

OK, I guess being a music major who worked with people in the music industry does not make me a musician because I don't do it for a living?

Yep. And your music taste sucks too.

Tight pants is more like... Judas Priest-y, or Axl Rose. Not that I have anything against them, but mostly tight pants are only found in Classic Metal, ie Alice Cooper, Poison, GNR, etc.

GNR wasn't a metal band, they were a good band but not metal. Poison was teeny bopper pop imo. Megadeth, old Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Iron Maiden .. Black Sabbath are metal to name a few.

If you want poor comparisons, ask PicklePrince.

Medicine is pretty objective. Music is subjective. Regardless of how many albums you put out and who you think is a hack, I still may well think your music licks yak balls. On the other hand, it's pretty much a given that a talented and experienced heart surgeon is doing heart surgery the right way.

Really, Jessica Simpson has more than two albums out, right? So by your criteria she's more qualified to discuss good music than you are.

System of a Down has this, I think they're pretty good. Do they count as Metal?

Really though, I could take a pass on 98% of metal.

This attitude above me is ********* Music isn't yours. The ability to critique what's good and what's not is not public domain.

You know "ART" when you see it, eh? I don't really care what you think or whether you "like" something or not. You aren't qualified to give a valid criticism.

Also, your Jessica Simpson thing. She sucks, but yes she is more qualified than people who don't regularly make music.

And as for the heart surgeon thing....ask anyone who works in the medical industry...I'm sure you'll hear some stories.

Actually, my major in college was Studio Art. Can't say I've done much with it, but I can say that if someone tells me they like Keane paintings over Cezanne, me throwing a hissy fit and declaring that only I am qualified to tell them what real art is isn't going to stop them from buying a black velvet painting of a kid with big eyes and enjoying it more than a watercolor of some garden. Which is all they care about anyway.

Sorry you feel that saying "this song sucks" is your special gift to the world, but people care about your opinion on it about as much as that of the "album critic" in the local town circular. And probably find you less qualified.

Joph, you have no idea of who or what I am. But, thanks for that little soliloquy.

I'm sure people care about my opinion about as much as I care about your opinion of my opinion.

Got it, get it, good.

Please share.

Actually, no doubt that's "secret info". Well, when you make yourself anonymous, you get the same criticism rights as everyone else. Keep dropping "hints" about how important you are in the music scene though. I'm sure when the curtain is drawn, the collective yawn will be deafening.

I have already spoken about my accomplishments here. And I don't know how I could have made it any clearer than in my last post (or for that matter in my sig) how much I care about what you or anyone else in the world thinks about me.

You can not dent my smug self-assurance. EOFS.

That's not my intent. I just like putting folks to the test and seeing if they can put up or if they prove they're full of shit by saying "I don't care what you think!! I don't care! You're not the boss of me!!"
