A cameo is when an actor appears briefly in a side role with minimal impact on the story as a whole. The example I'm talking about was George Cluny's character. He shows up after the first battle and takes charge of the company and gives a rousing speach. He's then not seen at all in the rest of the film. This was one of the scenes shown in the preview for the film btw...
And John Cuzack's character? He is not present during the first part of the first battle at all (although Woody and Penn's characters are). He appears in a group of people, volunteers to help take out a pillbox, performs in what is the most enjoyable combat scene in the entire film, succeeds in his mission, and then is never seen again in the film.
There are at least 5 big name stars that do this exact sort of thing. They appear in one or two scenes, appear to have some important role to play in the plot of the film, and then are never seen again.
I guess the problem really is that there *is* no plot. The film kinda meanders aimlessly through a series of battles with no real purpose or message to make. So I guess having characters appear and disappear randomly just isn't that out of place. The handful of characters the film does focus on are easily the least interesting characters on the screen. The only vague hint of a theme in the film is presented by Penn's character. Um... But I forgot what it was. Something about the futility of war, or something.
What makes TRL such an absolute stinker is that it teases you with the promise of maybe being a good film If you just keep watching, maybe it'll finally take off . Each time you see a strong actor appear on screen and seem like he's going to be the "hero" or something, he just disappears. And every time you think the film will finally get to the point, it makes another sharp left turn and goes on to something new (and usually more boring then what you were looking at before). You literaly spend 3 hours waiting for the film to start, while watching scenes that look like they might lead up to something, but never do. It's *painful* to watch. You keep hoping that one of these leads will actually go somewhere, but they never do. Eventually, you just pray for the film to end so you can get on with your life. Um. But even that request is denied. For the last 45 minutes of the film, many of the scenes end with a slow fade out. But no! They're just teasing you. The movie didn't end. They just fade back into another horrible scene that you don't care about.
It's just that bad...
I'd seriously watch the Postman 10 times (and waterworld as well) before watching TRL again. There is simply no comparison. I'm reasonably sure that the Geneva convention is, as we speak, considering adding the film to its list of prohibited items under the category of "inhumane torture". Heck. I don't think the guys at Gitmo are even allowed to show the film to the detainees there.
Man, I thought gbaji only babbled on and on about important topics. Guess not.
Another crapfest would have to be "The Stand" by Stephen King. Man this movie is awful, and the craptitude is amplified by the fact that it is like 6 hours long.
