Yeah plow goes along with farming. I guess farming would be the root of it, basically allowing a nomadic creature to stay in one place rather than move about to hunt and gather. This, esentially leads to civilization because of trade, specialization, and further innovation. I was wondering what people thought because I watched "Donnie Darko" again, and somewhere in the movie the main character says the most important invention is antiseptics.

The inclined plane

Yeah, that's a plow. And a *****. And so on. Can't imagine it took much inventing though.

Please explain. Im listening. I must have slept through that day of physical science.

Unless you are just going to tell me that the thread of the ***** is an incline plane. Which doesnt exactly mean that the ***** is an incline plane, rather it just doesnt work without the invention of the incline plane

Well it's an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder.

Sometimes I've seen the "wedge" and the "*****" classified as separate simple machines from the inclined plane, and sometimes I've seen them classified as merely extensions of it.

Any of the simple machines has a very valid argument and this thread could go on forever, but my opinion would be the printing press.

Mass production of ideas to be widespread for the world to consume.

I think writing itself probably takes precedent over the printing press as far as great inventions go.

Maybe we need two threads. One for tangible inventions, one for intangible inventions/concepts/procedures.

Anyone remember that 1st invention that spawned the creation of our modern modes of transportation (the wheel)? Or perhaps the greatest inventions of our history, the applications of the element fire?
I think these two should atleast be up there on the list, if not the top two.

If you want to talk about improving human quality of life it's probably sanitation.

Whoever said it before is probably right, it's impossible to find one "most importnat" invention.

If pressed I'd have to agree with whomever said inclined plane. Without it you don't have axes, plows, screws, etc.

Make that 2 posters, unless you were already talking about me. :)

What a fun procedure it is, too...

I think there's a general consensus that I'm the greatest thing since then.
