Hmmm... I thought Big Brother started in Spain. Not that it matters really though.

The US version has been doing weird stuff to pit people against eachother almost since day one. The first season sucked so bad that they had to. Of course, the primary reason for this is that the big draw to the European variants of the show was the sexual/relationship tensions when you put a bunch of people in close quarters with no privacy. Here in the US, we're freaking prudes, so no sex (since they couldn't show it anyway). They had to find a different angle and that was pitting the contestants against eachother.

It changed the dynamic from people trying hard to be the most liked/popular members in the house, to people trying to create situations to make other people disliked. Bad social aspects, but I suppose it makes for better TV...
