They had to give Achilles some redeeming qualities. Having him fall in love with a "slave" girl, save her from rape, and fall in love with her, BEFORE he kills Hector, the one character in the film who tried to do everything for all the right reasons, or he'd just look like a bad guy, too.

That would be Sean Bean aka Boromir from LOTR. Great actor.
