I read the intro from the translator, the info on the inside of the sleeves, the back of the book, and the first few pages of it while waiting for Flea to finish picking out her books. It seemed to me like an interesting read. Doesn't take much to amuse me. There was a part that went something like "Answer me or I'll hit you again, do you understand?".. "I don't understand, and don't hit me again".

Made me smirk.

I have read Master and Margarita, I barely remember it. I think I didn't enjoy it that much, and probably didn't get it. I think you have to have a reasonable knowledge of Russian culture to really appreciate it.

Last week I read Phillip Pullman's Dark Materials series. Pretty good actually, as far as children's books go. Underlying science vs religion theme - quite topical for this board lately.

I also read a book called Bad Thoughts, by a British philosopher Jamie Whyte. A very amusing read. It attacks bad habits and logic people use when arguing. All you people should read it since you spend so much time arguing here. I was reminded of each of the most argumentative people on this board (including myself).

It's a weird book. Intentionally wierd in that David Lynch sort of "Let's put a midget in there!" kind of way. Weird for the sake of.

Which translation are you reading?

I'm reading Niel Stephenson's new book, but it's slow going. A big part of me wants to go find him, punch im the face, and scream "You're a science fiction author, not Salman Rushdie".

It's Mirra Ginsburg's translation.

"Mirra Ginsburg was born in Russia. In addition to The Master and Margarita, whose translation was called "brilliant" by Publishers Weekly, she has translated other works by Bulgakov, as well as stories and novels by Yevgeny Zamyatin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Aleksey Remizov, Isaak Babel, Mikhail Zoshchenko, and Andrey Platonov. She has edited many books, including the collection The Fatal Eggs and Other Soviet Satire, and is the author of more than twenty books for children."

A good friend of mine that took music classes with me back in California was in love with Russia and anything that had anything to do with Russia. He looked Russian, and took pride in it. This book reminded me of some of the things he and I would discuss.

With a cast of Satan, a fast-talking, vodka drinking black tom cat Behemoth, Margarita, Pontius, and Jesus Christ, it has to be good!

Ever see "Living in Oblivion"? Only an okay movie, but the part with the dwarf was pretty funny.

Yes, small things are funny. Like the tiny net, or our tiny signatures, or your tiny, flaccid *****.

All funny things.

Was it less funny, as funny, or more funny than the remark about Jophiels small, flaccid *****?

Just to get an idea of what you consider a good one.

Really try to think about how small and flaccid it is. Picture it weak and limp like the noodle you throw against the wall to test if it's "ready", or like the $0.79 hotdogs from 7-11, the ones you see at 3 am on a Saturday night when you go there because you have no food in the house and this is the only place that is open. Or smaller even, think back to the pictures Thundra posted of pinworms. Yeah, that small and flaccid.

Then get back to me.

It does beg the question, Skeeter, why exactly are you so interested in Jophiel's *****?

Was there another thread somewhere that explains this puzzling obsession?
