I see you have a link to Air America Radio in your sig. Have you listened? What do you think?

I've only listened to perhaps a combined ninety minutes of it spread over two days so, while I was a bit underwhelmed, I'm probably not the best judge. That and I guess a two day old radio station may not have quite found its bearings yet. Being in one of the broadcast areas (Chicago), I only catch it while I'm in the car.. usually to/from work or on lunch.

I haven't heard Franklin's show which I imagine is the flagship for the station. Only caught some annoying broad in the afternoon and some dame with a British accent and her cohorts this morning.

Having never heard Pacifica (I had to Google it to see what the hell a Pacifica was), I can't comment there. But what I heard sounded fairly.. weak. Like the hosts had no real topic or issue they were discussing, just free floating Bush bashing with the occassional factoid thrown in. Not that I'm against some good ole Bush bashing for the hell of it, but I doubt you can make a week's worth of radio programming out of it.

Before anyone pipes up and says "That's all the Dems have!" (I'm looking at you, Gbaji) I mean you could get more intelligent and informed opinions off this message board than what I heard on AAR. I'm hoping it's just growing pains and they turn into something semi-decent, just because I feel some counter-balance is a good thing. I'd be saying the same if the situation was reversed; I may take fun pokes at Fox News, but I don't sit around hoping that CNN corners the entire news market or whatever.

They just need some time to figure it out. Worst case scenario it's a lot of Democratic advertising that doesn't have to adhere to campaign finance laws.

Like the Republican's have had for years with Limbaugh et all and Faux News

Looks about innocently...

Hey! I'd love it if the Dems would finally start seriously discussing "issues" instead of general Bush/Rep bashing. It might raise the level of political discussion in this country to a dizzying hight slightly higher then the "You suck! No I don't!" level it's at right now.

It's not that I think that's "all the Dems have". It's "All I've seen from the Dems so far". Personally, I believe that the Dems will have a problem with this simply because at the moment they seem to be a party that's not really unified behind anything other then that they don't like one aspect or another of the Rep platform. I'll say it again: It's really really easy to get an otherwise disparate group to agree that they all dislike someone else. It's another thing entirely to get that same group to agree on any set of things they "like" though. It would be really nice to see something coherent come out of the Left sometime before the election...

Of course, Gbaji.

Because we all remember how little finger pointing the republicans did when Clinton was in office.

It's not an issue of how much finger pointing is going on. The issue is what you've got going on *other then* finger pointing.

And I was one of the most vocal opponents on this board against the fingerpointing at Clinton back then. I didn't change my position based on which party is in the crosshairs. I disagreed with fingerpointing politics back when it was the Dem president that was being bashed, and I disagree with it today when it's a Rep president. Dunno. Seems like I've been pretty consistent...

The difference (as I see it) is that the election between Bush and Gore did not consist of Bush fingerpointing at what a horrible job the Dems did with the presidency. It consisted of arguments based on the issues: The Reps have firm and solid positions on economics, foreign policy, education, taxation, etc. The Dems *used* to have firm and solid positions on these. But I haven't been hearing them lately. All I've seen so far is a barrage of fingerpointing, with no firm statments from the Dems as to how their candidate would have done things differently.

I'll say it again: It's really easy to point at something the other guy is doing and say: He's not doing a good job. It's a hell of a lot more difficult to point to that same thing and stand up publically and say how you would have handled that thing better (and defend your position). And it's even harder to stand up and present a policy for handling a great number of "things" and defend your policy in general against the "other guy's", and defend it's general quality as a whole.

The Dems haven't gotten close yet to presenting more then a very vague platform. Until they do, there wont be any serious debate on the "issues". It's all going to be rhetoric, innuendo, and mudslinging. Which is a sucky way to run a campaign IMO, and cheats the public of the ability to make an informed choice when they go to the polls.

It's a sucky way to conduct politics, period. I am in total agreement.

My point is that each party, in my eyes, is equally guilty of the behavior, much to the disgust of many americans.

It's political REPORTING that's the problem, certainly not the Democratic party. This isn't a partisan statement, and I think it would be clear to anyone, an alien who just landed say, that the current administrations is obsessed with secrecy and vagueness.

Moreso than we as a nation have ever seen. Kerry talks about the things he would change constantly. Every single stump speech contains specefics of what he'd do diffrently and why it would be better for the country.

That's the oppinion of everyone who gets their current events from conservative shills, I guess. It's not even close to true, however. The party is unified behind a set of ideas. The messanger of those ideas is less important this election presicely because the ideas are what matters.

As opposed to the Republican ethic of "Bush's *real* likable! Not too smart, but people don't like smart!"

Considering there was coherance around February 1st I think you need to broaden your horizons of news sources. I realize that you're such a brainwashed partisan hack that you probably couldn't bear to read anything not written by Bob Novak or Fred Barnes, but the reality is that the Left is easily the most unified it's been in my lifetime. Unified on the platform, unified on the message, and unified on the messanger.

What would be nice is to see the Republican Party adress an issue of any kind without outright lies or slogans. The Republican's are the kings of slogans. "No Child Left Behind" Fantastic slogan. Doesn't matter if you never authorize funding for it, people don't ever do that much work on the news they just remember the slogan.

The Gabji's of the world anren't clever or motivated enough to dig a little deeper and see what the slogan's actually mean. But hell, it's the superficial average intilegence Gabji-esque voters that decide elections. So in a way I suppose it's a very promising thing that Gabji doesn't see any issue oriented content from the Left. Probably means we might be able to snag his vote.

FYI

From Drudge

After just two weeks on the air, Air America Radio, the fledgling liberal talk-radio network featuring Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo, appears to have encountered serious cash-flow problems.

The CHICAGO TRIBUNE is developing a story, insiders tell DRUDGE, on how the network was pulled off the air this morning in Chicago and Los Angeles, the network's second- and third-largest markets, because, the owner of both stations said, the network bounced a check and owes him more than $1 million! A charge the network strongly denies...
