Godsmack. I liked that band the first time I heard them, when they were Alice in Chains.

Hm, coming from a hard rock perspective, I would say:

Black Sabbath
Led Zepplin
Metallica
Tool

Others:
Beatles
Elvis
Pink Floyd
Stones
Old Blues players (Chuck, B.B., Buddy, etc...)

God...I am so sad to see The Beatles so many times on the three pages I didn't bother reading.

As far as band goes, definitely Depeche Mode.

Kind of stuck between 4 bands.

Tool- whats not to like about tool. Maynard is a genius.
The Mars Volta- also look up Sparta and At the drive in
Anti-flag - underground network alternative communication
Rage against the machine- political mainstream at its best. Very influental band. Pioneered the guitar near the speaker to make crazy **** happen.

Just my list ^^

edit:Xcept for Shanaia Twain of course =)- Her husband's label has been a big support for the punk community. Just a FYI.

I think someone needs to give a nod to the old blues artists who started the whole thing: Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, Leadbelly, Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, Etta James, so many others. Their music was copied, plagiarized and outright stolen in many cases with no credit given, much less royalties; their lyrics were sad and funny and full of heart.
