Oh, and I hope Trump steps in to deal with people applying this to Green Card holders. Though, in truth, it sounds like there's some confusion on the matter.
Quote:
News reports suggested the White House overruled the Department of Homeland Security’s recommendations on excluding green-card holders from the executive orders. Preibus, on Meet the Press, denied that, then appeared to suggest that the order won’t affect permanent residents going forward, but when pressed appeared to contradict himself.

“We didn’t overrule the Department of Homeland Security, as far as green-card holders moving forward, it doesn't affect them,” he said. But when pressed by Chuck Todd, the show’s host, on whether the order affected green-card holders, he replied: “Well, of course it does. If you’re traveling back and forth, you’re going to be subjected to further screening.”

Simpler version of what I wrote here:

When the argument is "Trump has ignored precedent in ways that 'precedent' alone isn't enough to give him the benefit of the doubt", defending his actions with "But look! Precedent!" proves little more than how much you missed the point.

I'm curious about the timing of the mass firing at the State Department the day before this ban was announced.

Was there a firing? I had heard that the upper echelon resigned a couple days ago but hadn't heard that they were fired or of anyone else being fired.

Not doubting, mind you. Just hadn't heard.

And now the Pacific Alliance (Mexico, Colombia, Chile & Peru) is talking about strengthening their pact and working closer with the European Union.

Trump's policies have been great for trade so far -- provided you're not the United States.

So far the most amusing thing thanks to ol' 45's ban is that an Oscar nominated director is apparently banned from entering the country for the event.

Oh, you hadn't heard? YOU HADN'T HEARD?

Perhaps you can hear this: uh, check your privilege, maybe?

It's easy not to hear people when you step on them in your oversized man shoes, isn't it? Jophiel? You fucking punk? Your white, male, heterosexual president that YOU voted for did this, and you didn't hear about it - why is that?

Because the people he's persecuting aren't your kind of people. They're highly experienced governmental officials, and you find that alienating.

Because their voices are so quiet, and every label you can stick to them turns the volume one notch lower. Black, queer, undersecretary for management. They're all the same to you.

Because your dad used to beat you with his old belt to the yakety sax theme.

Well, if I might be so bold as to say it - those reasons fucking suck. And so do you.

It's statistically likely, given his demographics. Jophiel might protest otherwise, but can he prove it?

We all know there are a lot of Trump voters out there who won't admit to it openly, who'll make all the right noises about minority rights and immigrants and democracy and then go into the booth and vote wrong. And unless Jophiel can show otherwise, I'm putting him squarely in that group.

Also, did you know that queer is filtered? That's some check your privilege **** right there.

It was just the usual leaving of political appointees.
Quote:
The State Department said that the four officials had submitted their resignations at the start of the new administration, as is standard practice with all political appointees throughout the executive branch of the government. Reporters who have covered the State Department for years said the Post report was overstating a normal feature of a transition. The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA), a sort of union for foreign service officers, also stepped into the fray, releasing an unusual public statement that said the entire thing was overblown.

Re: the State Department departures, I'm not arguing that their on-file resignations should not have been accepted; that's certainly within the rights of a new administration. However, it seems precipitous to me, at least, to release the leadership of an entire division (except for, I think, HR) without having replacements in place or even chosen. That makes implementation sort of problematic, as we've seen, and incidentally sacrifices any experienced advice about how to best handle such a move.

I kind of weirdly sympathize with the impulse to shake things up. I'm just not sure canning everyone who knows how to get things done before you or anyone you've brought on with you knows how to get things done is a great idea. Bureaucracies don't turn on a dime.

If the cabinet hearings are any indication then knowing how to get things done (or what the job even is) isn't exactly a priority.

If nothing else this Trump guy has been as entertaining as promised. Action-orientated, getting things done, changing stuff, going with the whole "I'm an alpha male" personality bit to the end, and pushing the agenda with it. I'm just going to sit back and enjoy watching this for a while and wonder how long he'll be able to keep this head of steam going.

Reminds me vaguely about a couple of research papers I leafed through a while back Hush. It's called being bored at work with access to lots of subscription scientific journals for free. Smiley: tongue about the behavior of different types of alpha males in primate groups. Long story short the more benevolent alphas tended not to last as long on top, but their downfall came with less disruption, and they generally lived on along the fringes of the group and usually weren't badly treated after their reign was over. The more aggressive alphas however, tended to stay on top a bit longer, but their downfall also tended to be swift and violent. The pent up aggression of the other members being unleashed once it was clear they were weakening.

It's probably not as relevant to modern society; still all the more reason to stay tuned.

Smiley: popcorn

So is Trumps adherence to this 'precedent' in this one case just a way to avoid the "Religious Litmus Test" thing? Cause on NPR this morning that was what they were talking about. Can't ban all Muslims, can't have a Religious Litmus Test to entering to the US. But if it's just specific countries, and not all Muslims, then it's not really a litmus test, right? (Or, at least, would be arguable that it's not).

The fact that he and/or his companies do business just being icing on that cake of Islamophobia he baked all election cycle?

Well, he already said that Christian refugees would be given priority, so he's already skating on very thin ice.

I just think that it's quite convenient Obama left him with a list of countries to use that just happen to be ones he doesn't do business with and somehow also bans all the muslims except all the ones that are from countries not on the list.

Or people are reading too much into it. Smiley: tongue

Wasn't it... "persecuted religious minorities" or something like that? Sure, it's code word for Christians in Muslim countries, but I think one NPR discussion was saying something about the minority sects of Islam. Not that I believe for any moment that anything this administration would do would benefit any Shi'ite (or, which ever sect is the one being wiped out... I'm not up on my Islamic stuff).
