Anyone who tries to simplify things down to be "for/against" immigrants just does not do the issue justice.
This your way of saying you agree that Trump was a total a-hole for calling all the Mexican illegals "druggies and rapists and murderers"?
Are you suggesting that Trump wasn't already a total a-hole for a host of other things he's said and done before? Seriously?
No, he's always been, but that his statement on Mexicans was particularly vile in the present circumstances.
I agree that it was a terribly worded statement, almost certainly designed to offend and create controversy, but what "present circumstances" make his statements "particularly vile"? For reference, here's the quote:
Trump wrote:
Thank you. It’s true, and these are the best and the finest. When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.
Are you saying that at some other time in the past, this would have been less vile? I'd think that present circumstances such as a very recent murder committed by someone who should have been deported but wasn't because of a set of institutionalized loopholes designed to prevent deportations would make this the best time (if there were such a thing) to make such a statement. The fact is that, while poorly worded, he's correct. We are seeing horrific rates of human trafficking. Virtual slavery going on with the sex trade. Tons of drugs, guns, gangs, and all the violence that goes with that. And this is largely because our current leaders are following a policy that basically just looks the other way and pretends nothing is going on.
It's become politically incorrect to even suggest that any illegal immigrant could be anything other than some poor honest worker just looking for a better life. But the reality is that it's never black and white. Yes, many illegals are doing just that. But a growing percentage are taking advantage of our absent immigration enforcement to engage in criminal behavior. Some border towns in AZ and NM are virtually controlled by gangs from Mexico. Right now. I suspect that most of you have simply never heard this. You don't hear it because it doesn't match the narrative that those in power want you to hear.
Is it wrong to reverse the relative numbers, as Trump did? Absolutely. But it's equally wrong to pretend that there isn't a huge and growing problem that should be dealt with. And if Trumps offensive speech maybe wakes a few people up on this issue, then I'm more than willing to let him take the heat on this one. And I suspect, so is he.
