Sorry for going off the FFXI topic, but movie discussion does come up in here now and then. The film has got a lot of hype but thats not what I want to focus on ^^

I have been looking forward to this movie for a while now for one reason: To measure the worlds reaction to a pseudo-controversial movie and see how many death threats/actual deaths result from stirring up the worlds fanatics.

Dogma attempted this a few years back to moderate success, and Kevin Smith did get some fantastic hate mail out of it. The Passion also stirred up the Jewish community, but again no deaths over it.

This is very good news. The way I see this, these films are slowly but surely wearing down the fanatics and paving the way for a very important movie that Hollywood has been terrified of for years.

The Preacher movie

Davinci Code is like the PG-13 version of "The Grail" from the "Preacher" books.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grail_%28DC_Comics%29

Due to a ***** up in heaven, a disillusioned Texan preacher is given the "voice of god" more or less. Believing the bloodline of Christ is tainted due to years of inbreeding, a faction of "the grail" wants to replace the descendant of Jesus with a more suitable candidate for making miracles happen: the Preacher.

Throw in the fact that the preachers best friend is an Irish vampire, and the fact that heaven wants to correct the mistake by killing the preacher, all hell breaks loose.

WAY more entertaining then the Davinci code.

One day the film will be made, especially with Hollywood trying to turn every comic into a film. If controversial religious films prove popular and profitable, we will be that much closer.

pseudo-spoiler possible for those that haven't read the davinci code or heard about it in the media lately >.>

For now, I will settle for the Davinci Code this weekend, and watch the audience get drawn in as they discover "The holy grail is not a cup, it's the bloodline of Christ"... A decent book but not original.

For an alternative use of your $10 this weekend, try one of these books:

You may now resume your FFXI banter ^^

I am a strong propoment of freedom of expression, and at the same time I think authors and directors do should confront criticisms against their experession of ideas and are willing to face up the consquences.

Making fun or satiring sensentive RL issues is going to offend people. Let's say it this way, you are free to make ***** slogan in a Jewish area, or calling N***er in a African neighbourhood. The freedom of speech allows you to do that... And in principle, the law is supposed to defend your right for expression. But at the same time, if you gotten beaten up or shot by other person, and even that violence is "unlawful," you already got beaten up or shot.

Freedom of speech is one thing, but also willing to stand up to the potential consquences is also part of the deal. I am glad most country courts are uphelding their laws to allow the movie to be screened. Of course, whether the movie will be screened is up to the theartre... who will of course consider potential reaction from local community as a factor to show it or not.

People are like cows.

Put them in a field and they'll eat grass.

Put them in a heard and they'll follow.

Put them on a sandwhich and they'll taste good.

Very valid points regarding the tactfulness of free speech.

The difference between **** hatred of Jews and the use of the "N Word" is that those are taboo because they are based on REAL events of hatred with surviving victims to this day. Davinci code is FICTION based on an interpretation of history for the purpose of entertainment.

As for the people who actually believe in this conspiracy, they are the same people who were wearing "I believe" t-shirts from the X-files five years ago. Before that it was JFK. This is just the "conspiracy of the week" for the purpose of entertainment. I have no idea why people perceive it to be an attack on their faith.

Freedom of speech was not the issue here. This was not an attack on catholics. If a poorly written storybook or a movie is enough to shake your faith, odds are you weren't very faithful to begin with...

As for the rate down... lol I deserved it ^^ This isn't an FFXI thread after all, just wanted to chat about movies. If you want we can discuss X-men 3 which is out next week (and how we should protest it, because it proves **** sapiens are an inferior species).

I laughed.... because that is actually true in RL. I wonder how the whole Japan, Germany and Italy go crazy in WWII, or how the whole China go crazy in Cultural Revolution.

Even Allah, Buddha, Jesus, God cannot save mankind from stupidity ;o

Has anyone actually read the book? Am I the only one sitting here who keeps thinking to himself that this book really wasn't that great? Dan Brown is a horrible author, sure his idea was rather nice even if he may/may have not stolen it from others, but his write just sucks, its boring predictable and his prose is about as elegant as crayola on walls. Dan Brown's books aren't meant to be read, they're made to be movies, if you actually give a **** about literature you'll hate the book, that being said the movie is probably gonna be pretty good. The second thing that pisses me off is that The DaVinci Code isn't even his better book in the Robert Langdon series. Angels and Demons was a thousand times better. The story was better, more interesting, and had good plot twists, aside from his rather lacking writing style, A&D was a good book. Sorry for ranting.

Just got back from the movie. Pretty much what I expected, but still a fairly interesting film. The less you know about the plot, and for people who haven't read the book or followed the hype... the more they may actually enjoy it (if they can stay awake).

They were running it on multiple screens on the local theater with a new one starting every half hour, and every show was sold out.

I heard fans of the book griping as I left the theater, but that is always the case. Critics were bashing it on the radio as well, but no one seemed to care. It will have a very big weekend, but once the hype wears off I doubt it will stay at #1 at the box office for long.
