A couple of people have told me they enjoy Balzac backstory and like it when I play in-character (as opposed as being out-of-character, i.e. just being myself, Janus, and chit chatting while doing the usual levelling/quests/etc.)
It is fun. It adds a dimension to the game, one more source of fun. It's more fun if people play along. It's even more fun when others roleplay too.
So, you never roleplayed or thinking you are not creative enough but would like to? Here are some tips.
First, define yourself a backstory. It doesn't have to be something complicated: an adventurer eager to explore, a knight wanting to her country/the world, a family member looking for an aquaintance who disappeared, etc. Just think of some of your favorite fiction characters, where did they come from before to be tossed in the novel? Just change the name :)
Next, try to define some character traits, preferably some not overplayed for your gender/race. The flirty Mithra won't make you stand out of the mass... the delicate Galka might. Pick up traits that you will enjoy roleplaying and that won't be a pain for other. (Yes, you may enjoy roleplaying the backstabing badass, but others might not share your fun :)
Last, try to relate what you do in-game to your backstory when telling other in-character what you did. So, if you have the knight profile, you didn't spend the last week levelling, you spent it obliterating the ennemies of Vana'diel :) If you have the lost acquaintance profile you might not be questing to get some reward, but looking for hints of where your dependant disapeared. Etc.
Try it out with some like minded individuals and you might just love it. It's a nice change of pace from levelling/questing/farming.
Cheers!
