Xaander's account hackedFollow

#1 Apr 01 2007 at 11:28 PM Rating: Decent
On March 30 a beloved dragoon named Xaander's account was hacked on FFXI and all of his sellable gear was stolen along with many rare/ex items dropped. This same sellable gear was later found on www.ffxiah.com sold by a character named Zwickee. When Xaander asked the GMs about this they told him that there was nothing that could be done. Sadly Xaander has left the game over this incident. He had only ever given his account information to Joemomma and he changed his password soon after, however, key pieces of gear that have not been sold are equipable by Joemomma. If anyone has some information regarding this matter please feel free to post on my myspace or speak to me in game. Thank you. Until then please do not support Zwickee or Joemomma due to this low behavior.

Thanks,

Riawyn

Thanks Riawyn for the great post. I also have posted warnings in the General Forum and on the Dragoon Forum concerning this matter. I will not make a post here because yours is great.

We will miss Xaander a lot. And Zwikee we gonna find you pimp! You may as well quit the game also cause you not gonna have peace.

I really dont understand how you can lay the blame on someone unless you know this person in real life and if that is the case then im pretty much going with you shared your account info.

Sorry you lost your stuff but hopefully a valuable lesson learned to those involved and all those who read this topic (if the theft actually happened...no proof = no proof, if it turns out to be false then what? Someone's name was soiled for no reason)

Oh and for the ten thousandth time:

YOU CAN'T GET HACKED IF YOU GIVE SOMEONE YOUR ACCOUNT INFO. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GET HACKED IN FFXI.

I got hacked about 2 months ago. no one ever had my information, I was not using any 3 party software and the exact same thing happened to me. how can you say you cannot get hacked in ffxi when things like this happen? If you could provide some proof that you cannot be hacked in FFXI, that would be awesome.

They are able to say such things, because they do not have a solid grasp on the many programming and security flaws that plague FFXI. Whenever someone comments about hacking, and whether or not it is possible, it is safe to assume that when they say it can't happen that they do not have a clear grasp on the level of vulnerabilities in the game. A few moments spent over at BG and can see the extent of things that are able to happen in the game. One of their posters is able to place people's EX items into their bazaars. The same player had developed an exploit that could force people's clients to disconnect from the server. This past week, for fun, he hacked his way on to the atomos server. It is entirely possible to have your character altered by exploits without ever giving out your account information.

On a similar note, while in the case that is being discussed Xaander did at one point give out his account information, after having changed his password he should have been safe. Other players used to have access to my account, and I never had things stolen after I changed my password. Unfortunately, even if you never told someone your account information, you could still be vulnerable to keylogger trojans loaded on to your computer utilizing exploits in your web browsers when you hit websites that you might stumble upon while surfing. A random image link in a forum could load a trojan onto your PC without you ever knowing it.

Regardless as to whether Xaander's account was maliciously stolen by a former friend, or if he was the victim of a keylogger, I would like to say that for the years I did play the game, he was always a good friend to me. He was a kind player, with a good sense to him. I'll miss you bro. Good luck in whatever ventures you undertake.

huh?! You've asked for proof of the impossible...

Of all the people who've said they've been hacked, you are the first that I've seen to say they've not shared information.

If you play on a PC you don't always willingly share information. No matter how good your defenses are, there's malware, spyware, hacker, etc. ready to take advantage of any opening.

Because 99.9% of the people reporting being hacked have also admitted to sharing their information with "my best friend in the game" or "my LS leaders", it's logical for Gamion to make the statement he does.

Sorry to hear anyone has lost gear or gil, but... sometimes it's just not appropriate to be trusting of a pixel-toon.

Please read my post again. If they didn't give out their account info and they didn't use any 3rd party programs than the only other logical possibility is that as someone said before spyware with a keylogger.

What I mean is that you cannot be literally hacked in a sense that someone hacks into SE. Yes I know it's been done before. I've witnessed server-wide hack'age yet I still find it hard to believe that someone was able to get past SE securities and all they do it for is to steal virtual items from a character.

If someone was able to hack into the servers why wouldn't they just give themselves the max gill the game allows instead of stealing someone elses stuff.

Bugs in a game does not equal hacking. Software changes require taking down the servers for maintance. Plus if you got into there servers they would have your IP and the police would be at your door in a couple days.

Programs don't just install on your computer by going to a web page. If you have your browser set to download all signed activex controls it will download those, but it is your fault for allowing that.

Most security issues is from users doing stupid things just about all others can be fixed with a hardware firewall.
