I dunno how much I'd be able to help you in game, but I will give you some points of advice.

Find a good, reliable way to make cash.
This should be number one on your list for now. In this server's economy, getting a head start in the economy will get you a headstart in the game, and your profits will show for it when high levels demand higher tier equipment. In personal experience, I'd recommend fishing. It's time consuming, it's boring, but trust me. One you start leveling a job and you spend hours on end leveling, those hours sitting around will be well spent.

Start doing quests in your hometown.
Another basic in your first few days in the world of Final Fantasy XI. When you do quests, you will earn fame, which will enable you to do more quests, that can give you gil, items, maps, or spells you may need for certain jobs.

Make some friends!
Another vital asset in Final Fantasy XI. Sure, you might be able to solo to level 20, but unless you take BST (regardless, you'll still need help to do the quest) parties and friendship will play a huge part in how you progress in the game. When it comes time to do your Artifact, having friends can prevent you from having to pay random people to do the quest, and there are other endless possibilities.

Well. This is my help to you. Take my words for what they are worth, and I hope you enjoy Final Fantasy XI as much as I do.

What ever town you start in, talk to every NPC you come across. You'll get alot of quests handed to you and get a little insight into the world that is Vana'diel. Alot of the little random tidbits you pick up will come in handy later. Clues to quest puzzles and little history lessons are there to be found.

For money, fishing is a good one, but very time consuming. As you walk around talking to NPC's you'll find your starter town has a couple crafting guilds. Pick the one that interests you and give it a shot. The crafting of consumable items can keep the gil flowing in. Best choices for each town in my opinion are:

Windurst: Fishing and Cooking... Cooks use fish and everyone uses food.
Bastok: Smithing and Alchemy... Higher smiths will buy ingots to save time from crafting themselves and alchemy allows you to make certain potions, ninja tools and arrow/bolt heads that can bring in some gil.
San d'Oria: Smithing and Woodworking... same deal with the smithing and woodworking you can make arrows, crossbow bolts, ninja tools (shihei, specifically) and lumber.

There are other guilds, but these ones, I think offer the best options from their respective towns.

Long before you get into a craft in any kind of seriousness, you'll be farming. Save your drops and collect them into stacks. Sell the stacks on AH. If you can leave you character online when you sleep/work, you can bazaar the rest of your drops.
