White Mage Armor HelpFollow

#1 Aug 24 2004 at 12:34 PM Rating: Default
Hello there, Wintaru here, I've seen or hear several of you fine folks here or there in the game and I've come to respect your opinions. I have some questions regarding my main job which I love, White Mage. Specifically, what armor people use.

When I started, I focused on upping my MND stat as much as possible but as of late I've noticed that it's not doing much good -.- Except on lightsday my cures are the same no matter if I'm wearing my MND boosting gear or not.

With that, I've started to go towards increasing my EVA skill instead. You can see what gear I'm currently wearing in my sig. Just got my Holy Breastplate (Yay!) but I was wondering if anyone had a guide that would show good recommendations of what armor I should have by certain levels? Or is it totally up to me?:)

Any input would be appreciated, I'm entering unexplored territory here and I'm deathly afraid of looking like a noob if I don't have the right stuff, not to mention I want to function at my best.

Quick Breakdown of Gear:

Blessed Hammer / Chestnut Wand
Strike Shield (for farming)
Holy Breastplate
Combat Casters Slacks
Air Solea
Devotee's Mitts
Saintly Rings x2
Mythril Earring
Morion Tathlum
Friar's Rope (considering Survival Belt instead)
White Cape
Justice Badge ^^
Dodge Headband

The equipment I'm wearing now is in my sig. It's more geared towards mp and mnd. I have a holy breastplate as well, but I only keep it for its looks :)

Will do. As a taru you aren't a sitting duck with those electrum rings are you? If not I suppose I should get a pair, any idea what they're going for now?

Ideally your party will keep the hate off you, but remember Stoneskin is your friend.

I've found that MP is the WHMs most important priority. MND is nice, but a little more on a Cure isn't going to help more than having enough mp for a completely new Cure spell. Electrum equipment is among the best equipment you can get for this purpose, and if you want, you can use some of your RSE to offset the HP penalties. The Wonder Braccae works, well, wonders. /slapsself

Here's my equipment at level 45.

I also have a Yew Wand +1 but the Blessed Hammer just looks better there doncha think? ;)

I'm hoping this will last me to 50, when I get the White Cloak set. Won't know about that equipment til I get there though.

You should update the Friar's Rope, the Druid's Rope isn't too expensive on our server, it's around 10k. And definately consider the Electrum equipment.

I dropped my WHM stuff awhile ago, but i have basically the same gear you have with 4 exceptions.

I had the Holy Phail at lvl 26 as a neckpiece. Now i know its 40k, but its fun to camp the NM with buds and the payoff is soo good. I was saying the same thing you are probably thinking now. The justice badge has no real downsides...so why not keep using it? Well the +MND is great, but i think you would appreciate the phail more once you got it.

I also switched to the Electrum hairpin at lvl 40. My reasoning behind this kinda coincides with my next paragraph so read on...

Also switched to Electrum earrings at lvl 40. Now i know your thinking: what in your right mind would make you give up 50 HP...YOUR A TARU!? My answer was and always will be, a WHM isn't supposed to get hit and, lets face it, when we do get hit, we almost always face certain doom if we retain aggro for any amount of time. I would gladly sacrifice a few HP for lots more MP to reduce downtime and most PTs will thank you for it in the end anyway.

Finally, i had energy earrings that i kept all the way since lvl 16. I love them, and i dare say that i will never part with them.

Well if you haven't guessed I'm kind of an MP junkie...but what Taru in his right mind wouldn't be ^^. Good luck in your selection man, i hope this at least give you another perspective.

Haha heya Jedi ^^

I bought 2 Electrum rings last night and as soon as I can get some ore and my friggen gambison to sell I'll pick up a hairpin too. Then I'll recruit an NM party to go kill whatever drops the Holy Phial (I think it's an orc in Beadaux but I'll have to double check).

Thanks for the tips all, I hate to check other players because I know some consider it rude so I really don't know what others are wearing at my level ^^

I use mostly MP+ gear, I would suggest getting maybe a Holy Phial, An Astral Ring never hurts, and the hairpins with a MP+ robe.

This is what I'm wearing atm, no I'm not lieing, and no, I don't run a fish bot...well not a "bot" I do all the button pushing. It's gotten so bad that sometimes I even press my macro when he's in his mog house collecting tha money ><

I just made Level 54 WHM and should hit 55 tonight. I've been drug through this game at break neck speed thanks to my real life friends and their crazy idea of a "static party" that meets far more than most would consider normal. I kept my level 20 gear to level 40 and then actually started buying gear (There isn't really a reason for a mage to wear anything until that point IMO(controversial statement disclaimer)).

At level 40 I bought:

Holy Breastplate
Chestnut Wand (enfeebling), Light Staff (healing), Dark Staff (medding), Hammer (looking sweet and kicking butt)
Electrum Hairpin (replaced with Healers Cap (oh my god I am so cute)
Electrum Ring x2 (Saintly Rings*2 (for enfeebling)
Black Earring
Enhancing Earring
Air Solea (replaced with Infernoo Sabbots and then Healers duckbills)
Wonder Bracchae
Druid Rope (adepts rope)
Devotee's Mitts
White Cape (replaced with Red Cape +1)

This stuff lasted me past level 50 and then I began to notice my spells being resisted. My set has leveled on Spiders in Altep, Anticans in Quicksand Caves and Altep, Demons in Castle Zvahl Baileys, Undead (liches mostly for Genkai 1), and Beetles (whenever we can find a beetle that we can level on we go for it) in Garliage Citadel and Crawlers Nest. All of these mobs would resist my spells for the most part until I built in macros to change my equips for MND stats. As a WHM, MND is the most important enfeebling stat so, I replaced a lot of my gear for enfeebling gear.

A WHM should never worry about their own HP. Technically, in a group a mob should never ever look your way. I've died twice in my party from levels 20-55 and they were both my fault (divine seal + Curaga is a bad idea against strong mobs (but it was so much fun!)). Astral Rings are nice, but way to overpriced. Get a set of Electrums and you'll be golden.

I hope this helped! It's just an example of what I have found to be a good set up for my white mage. You should do what you feel is best for the parties you are in really. Generally, I cast haste on a member, switch to Saintly's and Chestnut Wand, Enfeeble, switch to light staff, haste, then heal. It's a lot to manage but my spells rarely get resisted with +30 or more mind after food.

That sounds good, I've been dreading the cost of the staffs, but I suppose I'll have to start saving for them. I bought all the gear you suggest except the hairpin (and quested for RSE of course). I'm also working on a Holy Ampula. I thought I would be ok for a while but our static is in gear and we're leveling fast, I went from 42 to 44 in 2 hours last night so spells will also be an issue ^^ I suppose I should focus on getting a Light Staff first?

Well, for a while I was thinking that Light Staff would be the most important. I bought it first (at level 47 mind you, excited to level for the next 4 levels was an understatement!^^). But, as I level past 51 I have found that while the extra 10% or whatever toward Cures is nice, Dark Staff's enhanced medding abilities really cut down on the "waiting for mp" moments in a party.

So, although I bought Light Staff first, it's Dark Staff that I feel is the single most important piece of gear I have. I'm working on an Ampula now as well (i didn't even know these things existed until a day or two ago! ^^;).

Where are you guys leveling, Wintaru?

Well we're all 44 atm so we're still in Western Altepa at the Revelation Rock killing Beetles but they've become too easy so we're currently scouting new locations, I'm not sure where though. Possibly Labyrinth of Onzozo or Quicksand caves. We like to go to new areas to explore and XP, it was so cool the other night we were killing beetles and a tornado touched down off in the distance ^^ Better than trying to get through the hell that is CN.

I'll check on those staves then and see which will be easier to get, although I seem to have a hard time getting money (Taru WHM's can't farm lol) although mining has helped. I'm saving CP for the Tactician Robe at 50 so that will be one less thing to buy ^^

You can party off of Dhamel's in Eastern for a while. But yeah, for a while Quicksand caves is your friend. Spiders in the caves hit hard (i saw one one shot a Galka Paladin and a Hume War during a party one night with Sickle Slash, so be careful if you go!)

As far as money goes, I made a lot of my money from partying and saving up; but mostly I made it by teleporting and questing. The Clay Tablet quest out of Selbina and all the Ninja Scroll Quests make a lot of money. D2, BCNM, all of these things can make you money as well. We had a BCNM 40 night where all of our set went out and did 6 of the Balga's Dias Onion fight. While I only got erase, the rest of them got something like 100 - 150k each. If you have really good runs (we didn't do so hot), you can make 300k or more a piece.

A word of advice on the clay tablets. The one for Sarumunge Champaign is best accomplished by someone on the other side camping Roc Tractoring you there. For 10,000 gil, it's so worth running out there as a lvl 1 character with silent oils and prism powders. And, you can farm places like Tahronghi Canyon (bee's, onions, saplings) with relative ease thanks to spells like banishga and Banishga II (stoneskin is your friend!). Making money is just a matter of sitting down and doing it. It sucks, but oh well.

I've always been one to suggest WHM go for the following upgrades for equipment in this order:

1: MP (Some say they'd rather have a more potent cure than 2-3 cures more. They're obviously morons)

2: Evasion (You're going to need evasion...it's a must for those crappy parties you fall into. ; ;)

3: MND (At this point if you're all set with MP + Evasion gear, I would start upping MND because alot of MND can add up to maxing our Cure III and IV.)

Ya farming's a pain but I suppose I'll have to buckle down and do it. We do BCNM (Steamed Sprouts) quite a bit in our LS but on the runs I've been on we only got Phalanx, not bad but not as good as Utsusemi or Erase. Thanks for the tips:)

As a whm youll probably have a hard time farming anything high level. Besides of course teleporting, try fishing or some other craft.
