If that constitutes "condescension" to you, you probably don't have a place on the internet at all. I'm sure you could find a loving home at the forums for Hello Kitty Island Adventure, though.

If you'd read the whole thread, it would probably make more sense. There was a discussion of RMT being built in to Diablo 3. The admin in question deleted a link, and interestingly parts of the subsequent exchange seem to have been deleted, obscuring the reason I thought it was condescending. You can see some footprints by reading Nepabrite's remaining post, quoting Mazra. Yes, Nepabrite (post count 5, two of them in that thread) told Maz that goldselling is against ZAM forum rules.

I saw the parts that were deleted, and I didn't read it as condescending in the least.

Fair enough, although in the interest of full disclosure, let's note that you are the one who reported the post to begin with. You might find the deletion a bit more acceptable.

I read it, I did find it condescending and I stand by my initial assessment. I don't think "he's new" is invoked in the absence of any error, nor do I think posts just disappear if criticism was unwarranted.

This particular thread (the one here in Feedback) is about the state of things on Alla today. If you're happy with them, that's fine. Like a few others in this thread (and I believe I've used that designation correctly this time), I am becoming less satisfied.

To be honest, I didn't find it condescending. Hadn't seen that particular admin before and noted the low post count, so asked who he/she was. That I got some textbook automated response on something I already knew was slightly disappointing, but hardly condescending.

I'm just curious if the post of mine that was nuked suffered a karma hit in the process. If I ever want that Guru title, having a -5 karma rating, or whatever, in there is going to set me back some.

I don't find the comment from Nepabrite condescending, but I see how it could be taken that way. It's like the first day manager introducing themselves as "The Boss" to a group of senior staff.

What bugs me about it is the textbook response. I understand the guy is new, but have a little personality.

Admin nukes don't affect karma. Never have, Never will.

I still think we should be able to rate admins up/down when they're not posting in an administrative capacity. Smiley: bah

Not saying I'd sign up for it, but it seems like a win/win/win in these circumstances.

Easy to code, you just have the admin click a checkbox to indicate whether this is an official post or not.

It's not as though there's really any other way to do it. Unless ZAM wants to pioneer the technology that'll read a forum post and determine whether it's supposed to represent the official viewpoint of ZAM Network.

Every MMO since WoW (probably others before that, but most notably WoW) has come with its own forums for discussion (lol) and, more importantly, up-to-date news. There are also sites that spring up for every new game that focus on the database end of things. I know that for FFXIV, for as much hard work as the content managers around here put into updating ZAM's databases with items and recipes and such, other, more focused sites were doing it better. I'd be curious to see how much traffic the Rift soul tree calculator generates, because that's probably the best thing I've seen ZAM put forward in years.

I just think that there's a lot more competition in terms of fansites than there was back in 2003/4 when I first started coming to ZAM looking for information about FFXI. I don't mean to sound overly critical, but it seems that ZAM has become more about the business and less about the gamer. People who start up fansites know that it can generate revenue, but somehow a lot of them manage to convey more passion about the hobby. Just as an example, if you look at a site like RiftJunkies they go into a lot more detail with content managers who are involved in the game at a much deeper level than you see at ZAM. They come across as gamers running a site for gamers. With respect to the ZAM CMs, they frequently come across as content managers playing the games because their job requires it of them. It just lends a vibe to the place that is kind of sterile and not all that compelling. I read Tokikagi's editorials and hop around here and there and there are lots of great staff doing good work but it's...ya. Passion drives the hobby.

That's probably the biggest thing.

I remember when this place was a hobby. When it was a hobby, we were willing to support the not always accurate, and often times slow to be updated, content. It was a place created by gamers for gamers. Unfortunately it got too big and Alla had to sell, which is when a lot of the community feel began to disappear.

Now a lot of information is still slow to be updated, inaccurate, or just not there. There are too many other sites where I can find what I need faster than I can here and I can trust it to be accurate.

At this point, ZAM is usually my second or third stop for info, rarely ever my first. If it weren't for the forums, I wonder how many people would still be here. I'm guessing the OOT and Asylum are two of the busiest forums (excluding the FF forums since SE doesn't provide their own) and I would bet a good portion of the people there don't even play MMOs anymore.

You didn't hear? SE has their own forums now. It seems like it is intended more for discussion about the in-game stuff itself rather than standard forum whining, so it is heavily moderated. As a result, some of the backlash about the moderating have spilled over to here, but the forums do exist now.

The reason I remember floating around about Allakhazam expanding was to not throw all their eggs in one game, so to speak, but it's way too expansive to consider the site...focused. Right now, the only parts of the website that I could even consider to be competitive are Lucy, WoWhead, Everquest 2 and Rift. Access to the more extensive search option for the Everquest part of the website is probably one of the few justified reasons for some to actually get Premium service, but for the rest of us who don't play Everquest anymore...

Yeah.

If there is a specific section of the site you feel is out of date, please bring it to our attention in the feedback forum. a "hey, X game has Y now, but your database doesn't" is typically enough to get the ball rolling.

That's just it, Kao, I don't look anymore. I got so use to seeing outdated, incomplete and non exsistant information, I stopped looking for it here, and found it elsewhere. This site became just about the forums, and by ZAM's admission, that's what it would be while they used other ZAM sites for information databases.

My overall decision to leave and never come back (which means I am not really here right now >.>) was in part my disgust with forums in general, not just ZAM. I let that agitate me to the point where I was posting with malice, which in turn made some administrator's take notice, and properly deal with what I was doing.

I view forums now, as an online complaint department. And when consumers are unhappy with something, they will always comment negitively. Seeing a forum community troll one another over a particular topic isn't what I wanted in a forum. I wanted debate and discussion.

Any game I choose to play, I play because I enjoy it. Despite it's fault's, I still enjoy it, otherwise I would not play it. My enjoyment leads me to a forum to discuss it with others. I think the rise of official forums have led to the increase in complaint and negativity across all forums, fan sites such as this.

It's just a damn buzz kill to read day in and day out.

Newer games with more staff assigned to them typically recieve more content manager time. We also recently cut staffing hours in several areas due to several reasons, so some older games and forum query response times may be longer than they have been historically.

I am sure the decline in paid subscribers and posters as a good deal to do with this. Why come here to complain when you can do it in an official forum, where a developer may take notice?
Now those who are here, and have been here for years have their reasons for being here, and their support is appreceated I am sure. They have OT and asylum to rant and rave at each other over other issues. An online community isn't a bad thing after all.

Let me end this by apologizing to you and the admin staff that dealt with me months ago. I let silly things get to me, and acted childish. I'll even toss in a subscription to show how sorry I am. (Don't spend my three bucks all in one place.)

Unless you're talking about FFXIV, I don't see how you can see forums as "an online complaint department".

Granted, I've only used Zam forums for FFXI and FFXIV, I've received far more help than I've been buried under the negativity of the masses.
The only people who made me pause and consider the possibility of this site being a complaints dept., are the infamous one-post wonders, who complain about a specific part of a specific game, never to be heard from again.

But really, FFXIV sucks. And any negative commentary on the game is most likely a fair assessment.

It's not directed at this site primarily mind you, but forums overall. But still, look at the front page of XI forums and all the OMG, Tanaka this, and Tanaka that. Who the flip cares. Don't like the game anymore, don't bloody play it. It's amazing why one would harbor so much ill torwards something, yet still cling to it.

I more or less agree with Kirby, except that part about FFXIV sucking. It appears to be an awesome dress up game.

I hate XIV only because my outdated computer won't run it. I'll wait until the PS3 version to hate it properly. I've played every FF game to ever come to market. I won't be denied, dammit!
