I would, however, like to see an option for posters to see the names of people who rate them up/down. I ask for this knowing the potential for abuse that can arise from such an option--retaliatory PM harassment, rate wars, etc.

This will never happen. Admins can see the names, that is sufficient. Anything else would basically destroy the forum. Sorry.

It might be useful to keep some IP records not only of those who are notorious for using forms of ratebots, but of those who seemingly work in concert to attack other posters/inflate each other's ratings.

We have very effective tools for tracking IPs and rating abuse in place. Problem situations are dealt with as they arise. We also have very effective sockpuppet deterrents for problem users.

I am blown away at the number of people discussing only parts of the Rules Draft that pertain to karma in some way. Maybe it really would be better to remove it. We can still keep the arrows though, people like pressing buttons.
I like the karma system for the most part. The combination of the karma system and the filters are nice.

What I think they need to do, is do away with any visual indication (aside from Scholar/Sage/etc) that rating is going on. There's no real reason to show that little "good" "decent" "default" rating next to your post, thats what the filters are for.

The karma system is serving its intended function. The visual indication is basically a shiny hat that rewards people for offering good information, posts, etc. Do some people obsess over it too much? Yes. Are there issues with the system and various social cliques that form? Yes. But you run into those same issues in real life too. It isn't a utopian system, but it does work well in most situations, and controlls are in place to deal with the others when they get out of hand.

Removal of the karma system is not going to occur.

I didn't suggest removing the karma system, I suggested removing the little "Score: ____" from underneath your name on each post.

Its still the same idea though. People would be far less apt to whine about karma if the only way you could see it was by being Sage'd or Scholar'd, or by disappearing under the filters.

Or are you referring to something else?

I was aware they existed, but was under the impression that they were only enabled for admins.

Enabled for all premium users. Admins have an additional tag that doesn't show the approve box thing.

I'm guessing that these will never be turned on for posters, but I have seen Pikko use actual [img][/img] hotlinks in her posts before.

Again, the karma system rules was a section where there was some debte on what should and should not be included. We chose to focus less on content of posts that prompted rateing, and more on quantity and history of rateings. You are NOT being karma camped. There are about 40 people at various times in recent history that for whatever reason chose to rate you down. You should however probably stop karma camping flixeffect.

I have NOT been camping FlixEffect. I only rate them down when they are outright bad-mouthing me personally on the forums. I do know, however, they have been camping ME, whether you care to admit or not.

I didn't do anything to FlixEffect, but yet he/she/it starts attacking me with nearly every post I make, they did this for like a week. Unprovoked attacks. Of course I am going to rate that down.

I have so much material here... but this is neither the time nor the place for it.

But OH MY GOD you don't even know how much fun I could have with you here (and presumably your mom, since you make such an adamant attempt in all your post to say how you two play together.)

Thanks for the laughs. Smiley: laugh

I wonder about the people there, though. When I posted the notice of Arthur Clarke's death there, I got a "WHO?", which left me wondering why people post there at all, if they don't know the subject. Perhaps I'll go there and lurk, because God knows that they need knowledgeable people there instead of what they have.

Don't lurk there, post there! Seriously, the science fiction and fantasy forum needs more posters. As for Arthur Clarke's death, there was a post there by you and it is sad that only two people responded to it.

Can we add a section specifically addressing that whole Monkey thong thing?

Otherwise, I have no further comments or suggestions.

Maybe you should add some of what Exo said in this thread to the Uploaded images section. You know, just not in Exo speak.

As soon as you are aware that it really doesn't stand for anything at all it is quite easy to ignore.

You should really set default filters to none though. If people do not want to read posts they can change it themselves. Having sub-defaults as automatic filtered posts just make people treat them in a special way.

Kind of like sending the signal "GO AWAY!" instead of just "Many of us disagree".

Would it be possible to add a part where new users can see how to use many of the posting functions, such as quoting, signatures, smilies, tags, etc...? Or will that be a different section?

That would be this:

Which probably needs updating.
