I've never trusted people that say hello for no obviously apparent reason. Like I'm walking down a street and some random person I've never met and barely glanced at says hello as they walk by. Clearly they don't want to start a conversation, but they felt a need to say something anyway. I mean really, what is up with that?

Future stalker. True story.

While walking to school from my grandmother's house as a kid, I would say "Good Morning" to the old people who are walking their dogs in the early hours.

For some reason, it just feels rude if you pass in close proximity to someone and just ignore them, even if they are strangers. Of course, I've never lived in a large city where 100s of people are walking the street.

I agree. It's the ones that stare and say nothing, that are creepy.

The first time I was in NYC, I would say "Hello" to random people on the street, because their horrified reaction was hilarious.

The ones that weren't horrified were tourists. And very confused.

EDIT: Wrong word choice.

When I'm at my mum's I say hello to everyone because most people in close proximity to her house have some business with the parish.

When I stayed in Richmond, I didn't find my way to the Tube. I learned that saying hello, and then asking for the way seems to work better than saying excuse me and asking (how I learned it in school).
A friend of mine will address people with monsieur/madame when asking for the way or time. I've always found that odd.

Never visit Nova Scotia. It's no longer random.
