We have some military folks here, so someone tell me why this won't work. Move an aircraft carrier to the area and have a couple F-16s always in the air. A distress call comes in and the jet flies quickly to the area and checks it out. If a ship is indeed attacking another ship it blows it out of the water. The pirates lose a ship and some fellow pirates. Lather, rinse, repeat. Seems pretty easy to me. I can understand that it takes a navy ship a while to get to a problem area, but jets seem a tad bit faster to me.

So why wouldn't his work? Other than cost that is.

I suspect we have some sort of military laws (geneva conventions?) that prevent us from doing so...(at least anything that wouldnt be covert)

I don't know much about Geneva Convection law, but I think that should be the case. The Navy was began, Oct 13th, 1776 to thwart piracy and keep the sea lanes clear and free. I think NATO would allow us to do just that if we asked.

I think the F-16's would have a problem since they can't land on a carrier. F-18's are what he was thinking of. My squadron was a part of the recent piracy and it was awesome to know we were actually taking part in the main reason our Navy exists.

Maybe NATO would. I wonder how much political red tape we'd have to cut through.

Either sink or capture the pirate ships. Pirates them selves? Sharks are rather hungry this time of year.

I think you just made that up.

Sharks don't really like eating humans. Which is why they usually just bite and not consume.

OoT Field Trip? We could tie this up quick. I want to see a Great White fly.

I bet the rental deposit on scuba gear will be through the roof when we solve this and bring back all, or pieces, or none of the gear back...

Article105

Seizure of a pirate ship or aircraft

On the high seas, or in any other place outside the jurisdiction of any State, every State may seize a pirate ship or aircraft, or a ship or aircraft taken by piracy and under the control of pirates, and arrest the persons and seize the property on board. The courts of the State which carried out the seizure may decide upon the penalties to be imposed, and may also determine the action to be taken with regard to the ships, aircraft or property, subject to the rights of third parties acting in good faith.
