It's a neat looking dog, especially in that pose. I'm not usually partial to beagles.

It's got to be a strange life for an animal like that. The Gods in control of food get you to stop, walk, stop, pose, pose on this table, never get on any other table... it's a whole lot of strange and arbitrary rules for something that can't have it all explained to them, or WHY it's all going on.

Anyone who has more than a passing understanding of what takes place at dog shows, and particularly huge ones like Westminster, knows that the winner is determined based upon a formula of one half dog and one half politics. That beagle was maybe the third or fourth best dog in the winner's group. Personally, I thought the Weimaraner was an incredible dog, and deserved to win.

Strange, perhaps, but I can assure you the quality of life for any of the animals participating in this show is miles above the typical pet. These people spend tens of thousands of dollars on these animals. And really, how strange is it for a dog to run in circles and stand and look pretty when they are a domesticated animal? Any weirder than a dog who is trained to sniff out drugs?

Agreed.

The Akita from the Working group was a fine looking dog as well.

I'll never understand the draw to pet shows.

I loved the Akita. Large dogs are the bestest.

Yeah, I've only gone to a couple. There's a certain near-mystical weirdness about it.

It just strikes me as absurd that people spend that much time and money, just to parade these creatures around in circles, make them sit still for hours on end, and generally just "show off" for a small prize in the name of the owner and the breeder. I suppose the same could be said for car shows, etc... but with pets, it just seems... strange to me.

I was soooo gonna make the "what's next, doing this with our children?" comment, but people don't like it when I say things like that.

It's an industry built upon a hobby. Nothing more to it. People with disposable income pour absurd amounts of money into all kinds of hobbies. Several of my clients are millionaires, and without their eccentricity I'd be miring away in a cubicle still.

Thank God for them.

You're correct that most shows do award a "small prize" to the winners, but there are shows that pay upward of $25,000 for a breed win. The real money is in breeding, but honestly, most people in the industry are in it for bragging rights and because they just enjoy the shows. It's a hobby.

My first dog as a kid was a beagle (named Snoopy, of course), so I'll always have a soft spot for them in my heart. I actually dig the baying of beagles - it's awesome. I have one of their more stubborn cousin hounds (i.e., see my avatar) who are normally known for their bay as well. Go figure mine barks like Lassie on steroids - it's definitely not so musical! He rarely bays - usually when he thinks there is a burglar or wascally wabbit about.

Here are my 4-legged kids:

What breed is Gracie?

Here's the Domino. I need some updated pics, he's much much larger now.

I own a beagle and think he is a great dog. He is excellent with the kids. He does howl but that doesn't bother us.

Here is a crappy cell phone pic of my dog and my daughter from April 2006. His name is Bones...yes, the kids named him.

She's a Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever/Standard Poodle mix) that I adopted from the SPCA last month. She's about 16 months old now. She's one of those supposed "designer dogs" that are popular because if the breeding turns out right and the dog gets the Poodle dander, they are hypoallergenic - making them decent pets for people with allergies to dogs normally. Unfortunately, Gracie got the Labrador Retriever dander and was given up because a child in the family was too allergic to her. I have slight animal allergies and she is by far the one that I can't have sleeping up by my face for too long - it's like having a cat for me (I'm much more allergic to cats). Still, she's wonderful and I'll not give her up.

I found this off of Wikipedia:

Quote:
Hypoallergenic dog breeds, are those breeds that are considered the most suitable for those who suffer from allergies. Though they do produce dander, the amount is so small that very few people experience allergy symptoms when in contact with these breeds. However, no dog is completely 100% hypoallergenic. With the recent trend in poodle mixes (goldendoodle, labordoodle ect.) It is best to purchase a second or third generation puppy. Often puppies produced from the first generation lack the characteristics of a poodle, which make them less ideal for allergy suffering owners. The best test to determine whether your allergies will be affected is to spend 20 minutes in a closed off and confined area with the dog (cars tend to work well). This is a simple test which can save the owner from heartbreak in the future.

Snorre Jr. (the Basset) is 19 months, and Dashiell (Brittany/American Staffordshire Terrier mix) is 15 months old (yes, he's the biggest (85 lbs) and the youngest - I adopted him from the SPCA in May of 2007. Snorre I adopted from a Dachshund Rescue of all things. He was given up twice before (someone in family was allergic to him, second family had a cat that didn't like Snorre so much).

Is Domino a Great Dane? Beautiful dog!

Bones is adorable - I'd have adopted a Beagle but I've got more hound than I can handle with just the Basset!
