I want to avoid this movie at all costs, but given that my wife is a Johnny Depp/Tim Burton fanatic, I will be forced to see it.
Yea, but can he sing? I am dying to know this.
Besides, too of my favorites actors are in it. So I will eventually see it.
I love Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman.
I have no fears about Depp's acting ability, he'll pull the acting part of the performance off brilliantly. But as for the vocal part...
First, I never imagined him as a baritone. Second,
Sweeney Todd is widely held as the most challenging vocal score Sondheim ever wrote. It presents a challenge even for highly-trained classical vocalists. And Depp himself has admitted that he's not up to snuff vocally for it.
I'm willing to withhold judgement, though, because from all reports, Depp is an extreme perfectionist and is willing to do what it takes to turn in a superb performance. Whether that work-ethic can compensate for the lack of a lifetime worth of training, well...I guess we'll see.
I do think that is ANYONE can pull off making a film adaptation of this musical, it's Burton. The show is just too bizarre for anyone else to do justice to it.
