Season Premiere @ Sunset on the Beach in Waikiki

This was by far one of the most miserable experiences that I can remember. For the first time in years, Waikiki had great surf, thus attracting every surfer on the island to the exact same spot of the premiere. And for the first time in years, when the weather people said "scattered showers" they really meant it. When we got there the sand on the beach was wet, the place was *packed* full of people, and it was raining steadily.

My husband had come separately from the rest of us and it took him almost 2 hours to park the car. We were so far from the "red carpet" that I could only just barely see the heads of the cast members being introduced. Some of them were still filming and so couldn't make it but those that appeared included:

Matthew Fox (Jack)
Josh Holloway (Sawyer)
Maggie Grace (Shannon)
Daniel Dae Kim (Jin)
Harold Perrineau (Michael)
Dominic Monaghan (Charlie)
Naveen Andrews (Sayid)
Michelle Rodrigues (new)
two other new characters not yet aired

Since I had the kids with me I couldn't go up to the edge to take better shots or get a good look, but I could still see their heads clearly and that was pretty cool. Plus later they went on stage. Matthew Fox is really tall and watching Josh Holloway swoosh his hair IRL was pretty hawwwwt. I could also see the hobbit and Harold Perrineau, everyone else was too hard to spot. I took pictures, but haven't examined them on my comp yet.

The guy who explains the shaking camera running on disc 7 of the DVD was there to thank everyone for putting up with the rain. Some Hawaiian priest made a blessing and the mayor declared it "Lost in Honolulu" day, then said he was skipping his speech so we could all watch already. It's still raining like crazy, we're all cold as heck, *everything* is sopping wet, it's too dark to see our food, and the kids are all miserable.

I am going to respect the request of the producers in withholding information about the actual episode except to say that it was a Jack episode, that it rocked, and that those idiots at ABC should have made THIS episode last season's finale. This episode was what I was expecting to see a few months ago.

The really crappy part that I didn't realize was that even though I've seen it before all of you, I have to wait TWO weeks for the next one. sigh....

My synopsis will be edited in next week after the official televised premiere. I'll post pics soon.

And I'm never attending another Sunset on the Beach again.

---------------------

Hawaii sightings!

1. Man of Science, Man of Faith - Jack is running up the side of a stadium, Aloha Stadium to be exact!
4. Everybody Hates Hugo - McCluck's was filmed at the Dillingham Popeye's.
5. Jin and Sun bump into each other along the Ala Wai Canal.

The Numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42)

- The code to stop the "world from ending" according to Desmond. The code must be entered into the computer every 108 minutes, which is the sum of the numbers.
- Hurley's winning lottery numbers, which he got from a man he knew in a psychiatric ward who heard them over a radio frequency while stationed somewhere during a tour of duty. He later killed himself after being convinced he was cursed for using the numbers.
- Found on the side of the hatch door.
- Found on the label of the medicine that Desmond takes with him that we earlier saw him inject himself with.
- Seen on the jerseys of a sports team during a Hurley flashback.
- Kate was turned into the authorities for a 23,000 reward.
- Jack sits in row 23.
- Ana Lucia sits in row 42.

The Hatch

We now know the hatch is actually "The Swan" or Station 3. Judging from the orientation video, there are 5 more stations as the video says "3 of 6". The mystery is now that although they intended the two people stationed there to be there for 540 days (108 x5), Desmond still has a very large supply of food and medicine. The computer he inputs the code into is VERY old. The hatch was previously occupied by "Calvin", who is dead. Desmond has fled Station 3.

Hurley

In "Everybody Hates Hugo" we get more insight as to why Hurley hates the job that Jack assigns to him, which is basically Lord of the Food. One of the first things he lost when he won the lottery was his good friend, who quit his job when Hurley did the same.

On the island, Hurley finds himself in the same position of extreme wealth and the means to distribute it as he chooses. He shows Rose the station and she helps him to take inventory of everything. She finds him rigging the food closet with dynamite because his fear of everyone hating him and repeating what he went through with the lottery is so strong that he cannot bear to sacrifice all the bonds he has made with everyone. Already things are strained between him and Charlie, who asked for some peanut butter for Claire.

Jin

... And Found didn't provide much plot background to Jin other than to show how he met his wife Sun. He bumps into her after quitting his job at the hotel where Sun had been meeting a man she was supposed to eventually marry.

Sun

Claire finds and gives the bottle that the raft characters had taken filled with letters to Sun, who then buries it to keep it from the other survivors. Through flashbacks, we learn that she meets a very charming young man through a matchmaker only to discover that he intended them to be good friends only because he will be moving to America to marry a girl he met at Harvard. (Alanis song anyone?) She bumps into Jin after leaving the date in which he mentions this.

Pikko, I am so so so SO jealous that you got to watch the first episode of Season 2 before all of us! But I'm sorry that it rained, it was miserable, and it was crowded, but still! Post pics when you can!

I probably should have written my write-up the next day, I'm not sure I remember everything. I'll work on it today.

Pikko, hope I save you some typing, but I decided to try my hand at an episode summary.

Okay, I have to say that first and foremost that the first episode of Season 2 has answered some questions and COMPLETELY open a whole new can of worms!

Here’s my rundown:

We first see someone wake up and jump down from an upper bunk, it looks like a small studio apartment. He puts on a record and starts playing some music, “Make Your Own Music” by the Mamas and the Papas, but I think the show is using a version of the song sung by the Carpenters. The guy does some kind of workout (pullups on a steel bar attached to the ceiling, crunches on a slant board, exercise bike–speed was 16mph) and makes a smoothie to drink down (protein powder with fresh fruit and eggs). He also takes a bunch of medicines (the prescription number on the bottle were the lottery numbers!!!) Notice how the entire set up looked like it was the 1970s? The dishes, the clothing, the stationary bike?

The room with all the techie stuff, with the tape machines and the Apple IIe computer looks way old. I think he typed in the lottery numbers to boot.

Anyway, the explosion happens, he grabs his gun (how many guns did he have???) and there’s that long shot sequence between him looking in the mirrors to following the path of each mirror reflection to up the hatch to Jack and Locke looking down the hatch...

More of Jack’s backstory is in this episode. We find he is a surgeon and he finds himself in surgery treating a young woman (Sarah, his fiancé). We find that she is engaged to someone else (Kevin) and she was in a bad car accident (she’s by herself). The driver of the SUV was Adam Rutherford (Shannon’s last name is Rutherford!) and Jack finds himself choosing to treat Sarah over Adam Rutherford so poor Rutherford is pronounced dead on the table at 8:15 (the numbers!!!). Sarah whispers before Jack starts surgery that she needs to dance at her wedding (meaning her wedding for her and Kevin).

Okay, in the present, Jack makes the decision that they should all head back to the hatch. Locke (not surprisingly) wants to go straight down the hatch. Jack makes the argument that they can go down later, but they need to get back to the rest of the survivors in the caves. Locke grudgingly goes along with Jack’s decision. They argue about not having enough faith and belief in fate. Very philosophical.

Meanwhile, back at the cage, Shannon realizes that she has lost the dog Vincent and she wants to go out and look for the doc. She is very upset that she lost the dog. Sayid tries to stop her at first, but in the end decides to help her. They go out into the darkness and get separated (of course). Anyway, Shannon starts hearing whispers (just like Sayid and Sawyer in season one). She falls, looks up and sees WALT dripping wet. She says “Walt, what are you doing here?” Walt says something but you can’t quite make it out. She looks around when she hears Sayid shouting for her and looks back and Walt is gone! BTW, this totally, 100% creeped me out and I get the chills just remembering it!

Anyway, Jack’s flashback continues to him looking down at his patient Sarah as she awakens. They talk for a bit and Jack dryly tells her about her injuries and that her back is broken. Jack’s father watches from outside the room and in the hallway, he tells Jack that he needs to give hope to the patients. Jack says that is false hope and his father replies that it is still hope.

In the present, at the cave, Jack, Locke, Kate and Hurley return to the cave and Jack tells everyone that the hatch is not an option and everyone pretty much starts freaking out (particularly Charlie). Jack reassures everyone and does this leader speech of how everyone is going to be okay and he promises that. But Locke gathers up some cable and heads out to the hatch again. Jack goes up to Locke before he leaves and asks him what is he doing and Locke says he’s going to the hatch. So Locke leaves and a few minutes later Kate tells Jack that Jack did a good thing with the speech and all, but she’s going after Locke to go down the hatch.

Jack’s backflash story continues to Jack meeting with Sarah’s current fiancé Kevin. Jack says that he will do additional surgery on Sarah. Jack tells Kevin that Sarah’s condition is very bad and she may need professional help for the rest of her life. Kevin freaks out and it’s obvious that he won’t be around (what a prick). Anyway, Jack goes into surgery and Sarah tells Jack that it’s okay if Jack can’t fix her. Jack promises her that he will. After the surgery, Jack goes to a stadium and starts running up the steps. Another runner comes up another aisle and he and Jack sprint/race up the steps. Jack falls, sprains his ankle, and the other runner goes to help him.

The other runner is an Irish/Scottish guy by the name of Desmond. He and Jack talk a bit and Desmond reveals that he is training for a race around the world and that he was almost a doctor. He asks Jack what is wrong and Jack says that he is upset because he made a promise and can’t keep it. Desmond asks why not and Jack says he just can’t. Desmond goes on to say something about having faith and miracles and you can see that Jack just isn’t buying it. Anyway, Desmond tells Jack to “lift it up” meaning the ankle, but you can see that there was another meaning. And when they part, Desmond says “see you in another life, brother” or something to that effect.

Back at the hospital, Jack sees Sarah and she asks about Kevin. Jack says that he hasn’t seen Kevin around. Sarah is disappointed, but doesn’t seem surprised to me. Anyway, Jack starts to cry a bit and tells her that he couldn’t fix her and she’ll be paralyzed from the waist down. Sarah asks him why she can wiggle her toes. After touching her legs, Jack finds that she isn’t paralyzed. Tears start to roll and he’s just a happy camper.

At the hatch, Locke lowers Kate down the hatch and she goes down first because she’s smaller. She drops the flashlight (why oh why couldn’t they wait until daylight???) All of a sudden, a bright bright light shines up through the hatch, you hear Kate scream, the light dies and Kate is just gone! So Locke goes down after her.

Anyway, Jack goes to the hatch to talk to Locke and Kate. He finds the cable, but no Locke and Kate. He goes down and finds a bunch of stuff. There’s pipes, a pair of shoes neatly lined up, some graffitti (the number 108, an eye, letter “M”, word “sick”, a sun), old paint buckets/cans. It’s very dark and very creepy. He finds himself in the “control room” with the tape machines, computer and he’s about to push the button that says “EXECUTE” on it. Anyway, he hears a gun click and Locke says “I wouldn’t push that button if I were you.” Someone has a gun pointed at Locke’s head. They have a bit of a standoff and Jack here’s the other person say “brother.” He looks closer and recognizes.....DESMOND!

Okay, I’m tired typing. What do you guys think? I’ll post in a bit, my fingers are cramped.

Okay, got my fingers all uncurled after my last post. Here's some stuff that occurred to me and after checking with some other boards:

The driver of the SUV that died while Jack was working on Sarah was named Adam Rutherford. He was pronounced dead at 8:15. Those are 2 of the lottery numbers. Shannon's last name is Rutherford. I think she was married before and this is her married name. So I think she's another connection to Jack.

The place that Desmond is in at first appeared to be outside and not underground. The window by the bunks appeared to have sunshine streaming through it. Also, notice there were two bunk beds. Desmond got down from the top one. I think there might be someone else.

Everything looked like 1970s stuff, but did anyone notice that some of the stuff looked very new? Like the washer and dryer. I think that shows that he's got a connection to the outside world somewhere.

And I have no clue about Walt. He was dripping wet, so maybe he got off the Others' raft, but I couldn't quite make out what he was saying. Some people claim that if you play what he says backwards, he's saying "Push the button. No button is bad." Or maybe it's the other way around. I have no clue.

I think that Desmond will have a back story connection to every survivor.

Things I noticed:

The number he punches into the computer are 4 8 1 5 1 6 2 3 4 2 execute

I notice the label on the medicine that he shoots into his arm identifies it as CR 4-81516-23 42

the 2 numbers you see when he opens the safe to get the gun are 23 - 42

all the light switches are flat panel decora type, which means that they would have been added after 1990ish.

I hope they answer some questions in this season, it's a good show but I don't look forward to each episode like lets say 24. Though it is quite an interesting show and I really like it. The best part about this show is it's consistancy, I haven't seen a bad episode yet.

To anyone who has the dvd's are there good extras on it? Such as the making of, cast comentary.

It's too bad Veronica Mars has to go up against lost, that is another great show. first season comes out on dvd I think next week:)

I am glad there arn't a bunch of new reality shows. They are finally adding good actual shows, there are almost too many that I want to watch. Currently going to be watching every week: Prison break, 24, alias, lost, smallville, veronica mars, surface, threshold, er, supernatural, numbers. Then there are others that I catch if I can.

Dang those are some great observations! I didn't notice any of the numbers things except for the stuff on the wall.

One thing though, the man in the ER was old. I think that was probably Shannon's dad, not her husband. Boone's mother now owns the wedding business, but she married Shannon's dad IIRC. This was why Shannon felt she deserved money, because it was her dad's business but the mom took it all.

I still love this show to death, but Battlestar Galactica has taken over as #1 for me.

-Also whats with the second bunk under desmond.
-noticed the time of death, for the other driver was 8:15.
-little things too like all the computer equipment/stereo is late 1970's, but the washing/dryer are brand new, as well as the laudry detergents, dish soap are diffently modern.(suggesting that desmond moved down there recently.)

-http://oceanic-air.com/seatingchart.htm if you click seat F-42 you see that Ana-lucia cortez(Michelle Rodriguez) was in seat 42F tail end of the plane so it defenitly survived.

If you notice in the opening scene with Desmond, it looked like there was another person living there. The control room struck me as if there HAD to be two people, kind of like a fail safe thing so one person couldn't take complete control or something like that.

I don't know about the beds, but it must be artificial lighting of some kind. Probably designed to make it look like the windows go outside. I say this because they blow the hatch at night and they go down there at night. He hears them blow the hatch not long after waking up, so I think this means it is night when they show those window looking things.

Lost = greatest show ever so far. Lets hope they don't ruin it somehow ^^

PS. Walt is saying, don't push the button. He obvisously has some sort of psycic abilities. He told Loche not to open the hatch after only touching his arm. It also hints that the bird flying into the door in season one may have been caused by Walt becoming emotional. Also, Jack almost pushes the button on the PC, but Loche stops him first "I wouldn't do that." with Desmond holding a gun on him.

Totally a guess on my part. But I think perhaps Desmond has to enter a code everyday or every so often for some reason. The wrong code or failure to enter a code at the right time probably triggers a bad thing. This would explain why Walt doesnt want anyone to open the hatch or to push the button.

Hehe, I love to speculate about this show. Also, anyone notice that Quarentine was spray painted on the Inside of the hatch... Desmond obviously planned for the possibility that someone would try to open the hatch, with the mirror set up. However, why would he spray paint quarantine on the inside of his own hatch??

also i imagine there a labyrinth of tunnels under the island, that the others (may be living use) cause why is that one hallway all cemented up from desmond's side.
#18 Sep 28 2005 at 2:17 AM Rating: Excellent
Since the words "QUARANTINED" are written on the inside of the hatch, I wonder if DESMOND, and any others who may be living down there isolated themselves on purpose because they thought that something bad was going to happen to the outside world?

It may have already happened and the people on earth have already been effected, they just don't know it.

Another thing I thought of is that it may be WALT who they have quarantined themselves from. They may have been expecting him and fear him so hid themselves away. I think WALT is the most important character in the show and that everything is lionked to him. It has even crossed my mind that WALT may be evil and knows excatly what is going on and is actually contolling all events.

The great thing about this show is that you can come up with the most obscure, corniest, most far-fetched explanations, and they all sound completely believable.

The only connection I could see was that the room they were talking about Walt in was the same room that Claire met with her prospective adoptive parents. But after some thought, I decided that it wasn't intentional because Michael wasn't in Australia.

Man, Sawyer was one-liner hog last night. We were cracking up at everything he said.

"You got a band-aid?" rofl

The connections that I can think up off the top of my head:

Jack - Jack's Dad drank and "philosophized" with Sawyer in a bar in Australia before he died.

Sawyer - Was arrested and booked in the police station when Boone was talking to the cops about helping his sister.

Hurley - Owned the box factory that Locke worked for.

Jin - In Jin's back story, Hurley was on TV (apparently for the news conference when he won the lottery) when Jin was walking through an apartment.

I'll edit this post if I remember more.

Yeah, Sawyer had me in stitches last night.

I agree with you, the room that Claire met the prospective parents in is different than the one Michael was in with his ex. Most attorneys' conferences' rooms look one and the same, trust me.

Anyway, I wondering if the white stuffed bear that Michael gave to Walt is the source of the polar bears on the islands.

And some people are claiming that the shark/sea monster that was giving Michael and Sawyer problems had the logo of Desmond's company/organization imprinted on it. Anyone notice that? My husband thinks it's odd that with all the blood Sawyer was dripping into the sea didn't draw more sharks (sharks supposedly can sniff a drop of blood miles away).

Okay, no surprise to me the numbers Desmond had Locke put into the computer were the lottery numbers. And what was the deal with the numbers overhead scrolling/flipping around? They landed on 108, the sum of the numbers.

And if I was Kate, after finding all that food, I would have grabbed more than just a few candy bars. If there was a can opener around, I would have gone to town.

It's pretty apparent that Desmond is waiting for someone to relieve him of whatever. He asked Locke "What does one snowman say to the other snowman?" Definitely some kind of code to show that the right person is coming. And it looks like the relief person is WAY long over due, considering all the marks that are on the wall. If Desmond met Jack about 8 years ago, he's been on the island for at least that long.

If you do a Google search on "What did the snowman say to the other snowman?" you get, "Do you smell carrots?" lol It's a cute children's joke.

As for the numbers, my husband said it must be a failsafe. He has to enter the numbers when the beeping starts to show that someone is still alive down there otherwise "something" will happen. He also said that if he has to do it every 108 minutes the guy probably doesn't get much sleep.

I find that its the regular networks answer to HBO's "Carnivale", which HBO cancelled a few months ago after 2 seasons because it was "Too complicated for the average viewer to understand" @#$%@#% idiots, I am still pissed off about that.

Mystical intrigue, drama and suspense in an unusual setting.

Oh and Evangeline Lily is smoking hot.
