so when FFXIV 1.0 came out three yrs ago (or however long ago it was) i had a PC built to max out the game settings. Now with 2.0 during beta i bench-marked high enough for it to say can easily run on high settings. Come actual game time, Putting it high desktop net me a 1 FPS. High laptop 20 FPS, and Standard desktop 60 FPS. I have played with lots of settings, but ti'm not satisfied. I want to max everything out and play the game on MAX settings. I am not really all that knowledgeable when it come to hardware and where i should upgrade. So i am asking the community for advise. from what i think. It seems as simple as just upgrading the graohics card and maybe even going with two cards linked together. But please tell me what i should do. to really max out my system for game play. Well, you have a decent upper end Core i-7 processor. It's the Socket 1156 variant, so you're capped at 4 ram slots. but you have 8GB which is probably fine. GOing with 16 gb wouldn't hurt anything, but probably won't help in most circumstances.
The biggest performance upgrade you could do for the least amount of money would be go with a Solid State hard drive. That will cut your boot times, game load times and any save operations dramatically. You want a Samsung 840 series Pro drive, at least a 256GB one. Keep your existing drive as a data drive.
After that you would want to maybe look at a video card upgrade. The one specification you didn't post up there is what size power supply you currently have. If its smaller than a 700 watt, you aren't going to be able to go with dual cards in crossfire mode without an upgrade. You certanly have enough power to drive at least one high end card though since you already have a 5800, which is an older high end card which will draw around the same wattage. Current top of the heap on the AMD side are the 7970, 7850, and the 7850. Bigger number is a better faster card with AMD. You're about 2 generations behind with that 5800, so a 68xx or a 78xx or 79xx would both be an upgrade for you.

Thanks very much for the help, exactly what I was hoping for. As far as the power supply it's been awhile since I opened it up, but I believe it's around an 800 watt or so, I'll be sure to double check it before I try to crossfire. The links and all your info was very helpful. Tyvm.

I have the same processor and it's overclocked to 3.6 GHz with aftermarket air cooling. Ran a little too warm for me at 3.8 GHz but the box being under my desk with iffy ventilation isn't helping that. Could probably do 3.8 GHz on air if it was up on top and not storing heat.
