My current system has a Phenom II X6 3.2Ghz CPU, 8GB memory, and Gforce GTS 450 GPU. I am currently dual booting W 7 (64) and Win 8 Pro (with 8.1 Beta upgrade) . I am thinking of upgrading my video and am wondering if there is any advantage in going for a win 8 card. Also I Nvidia GPU's but was wondering if it would be good to go Radeon since my mobo has a ATI chipset,

Technically Windows 8 has a bit faster gaming, but not enough to make up for interface. Also If upgrading always go for a 60 or higher (660, 760, 670 etc.) As they are what i would consider the entry level gaming cards, the 50's can play most games but The 60+'s have longer staying power. The 660 is more powerful than the ati 7850
Cards are kind of go with what you prefer, Me, Kao, and a few others are Nvidia people, but some people have ATI. Overall ATI likes to be a tad more powerful but a tad less stable drivers wise. The Chipset really doesn't matter overall, its more of a controller than anything
In the end go with what you feel is acceptable for your needs and fits in your budget. Some people like to wait for killer deals and dont care about the namebrand some always buy the same namebrand no matter what the deals are.

I've never had a problem with AMD cards (ATI has been dead for years, by the way). You get the same horsepower you'd get from a comparable NVidia card for much less money. You can also get much better bundle deals. Some people have had driver problems, I haven't.

I had 2 problems with Raedon cards. One was a DirectX problem and a random crash that occurred when I switched from a CRT monitor to a LCD. The last Raedon card I had was actually quite good but would give a BIOS error on boot. Still, I'd give AMD another chance if I got a good deal
I have had one game that gave me trouble with my AMD card (Sniper Elite V2) but I haven't tried recently with updated drivers.
In my general experience, I notice games seem to be "Oh, it doesn't play well with [XYZ] cards" in about equal proportion on the various forums. Neither comes up often but one isn't worse than the other.
