Let me describe what I have and what I am trying to do... what I describe doing here is something I can actually do (if it works) without having to spend money on buying anything new.
My main PC and modem is in a back room of the house, my secondary PC and game systems are in the living room.
My main PC HAS to have a wired internet connection because that is what I want.
My game systems and second PC need a wired connection.
I would like to have my D-Link wireless router in the living room so I can use the WiFi for my iPods, iPad, laptop, and anything else that I am looking at when I am sitting on the front porch.
I have an Epson printer that I can hook up to my network that I want to be in the back room with my main PC.
To get the internet into the living room I am going to run a CAT5E ethernet cable under my house (off the ground and away from electric wires and copper pipe) from my back room to the living room.
Is it possible for me to go from the modem to a switch box (I actually have two switch boxes, but I believe I will only need one)which would be connected to my main PC, the printer, and the ethernet wire going under the house to the living room... Then in the living room have the wire that comes from under the house (from the back room) go directly into the wireless router and then from the router have cables going to my game systems and the second PC?
If this will work, will I still be able to control the wireless router with my main PC?
I heard that I can't go to the wireless router via a switch, and I can't find a relatively cheap Wireless Access Point that I can just throw into the living room.
Then I heard that most newer wireless routers are made with WAP in them, so I am curious if I can just go from the modem to the wireless router in the back room then to a different wireless router in the living room (via the ethernet cable under the house).
And if that is possible how can I tell if the new wireless router has WAP just by looking at its box?
I don't want to spend any money if I can get away with it, and if I must spend money I don't want to spend over $40 if possible... if something is good and it costs a little more then by all means tell me.

If you move your wireless router to the front room, what are you going to connect your modem to? Can you make a quick drawing of what your layouts are, and what you want to make it?
The short answer is, yes, you can add a wireless router in your front room and use it for wireless access to your house and porch, and still have wired connections from the first router work. You'll just need to disable DHCP on the second router so it won't try to assign addresses to your network and interfere with your original router back at the modem.

Yes, it's possible. I had my home setup a similar way for quite some time, just the first router was not wireless. A little advanced configuration needed, but nothing too serious. Do you plan on using both wireless networks? Or are you going to disable the first one and only use the second?
Also, I guess my question is how big is your house that the wireless signal from the current router won't reach the front porch? (My home's only 1300 sqft, I get good signal all over).

I just assumed he had the router sitting around, and was just looking to use it to make it work (and didn't want to buy something else). I think I have three of them in my closet right now collecting dust.

I can not find a cheap WAP that has good reviews, but I can find cheap ($30-ish) wireless routers all over the place.
My D-Link DI-624 wireless router is about 6 years old and it worked really well when I first got it, but it is now in the back room, and in order for it to reach the front porch it has to go through about 5 walls plus an outside brick wall.
The wireless router in the back room would basically just be used as a router... no need for it to be throwing out a signal if I had something in the living room doing it as long as I can still print via wireless networking.

You want a true router, not just a switch in front of your main gaming PC for security, but aside from that, you shouldn't have any issues. Unles syou have a huge house though, you should get decent wireless N signal off a wireless N router, assuming your devices are N and not G.

Kao, is there a way to distinguish if a wireless router has an AP mode from its retail box? Or do almost all wireless routers have it built in now?
I believe the D-Link DI-624 wireless router I have is a G and not an N, so if i am going to get a new wireless router I need to get an N, right?
I am going to run by Best Buy tomorrow to see what they have... I usually just get stuff from Newegg, but I am going to be a block away from BB anyway.

Most of the linksys and netgear ones do. Many but not all of the d-link ones do. Check your devices, if you have a wireless N card on your latop / phone / tablet / whatever, then a wireless N router will be a huge improvement. if you only have a wireless G device a wireless n router will tend to push G signal further than an older wireless G router, but not a huge amount. if you have any Primary devices that use N, it's definitly worth it.

I ended up buying a Linksys E1500 ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Linksys-E1500-Wireless-N-Router/16401807 ), so now all I need to do is to run the wire under the house (Eek!) and figure out how to disable the wireless capability of the d-Link DI-624 wireless router I have and just use that as a standard router.
So you bought a 60 dollar router instead of a 30 dollar WAP?

Yeah, I could not find a WAP at a local store and I felt like I needed the new N wireless router anyway.
It took some trial and error, but I finally was able to cascade the two routers and got everything up and running... so now I have both wireless routers up and running and although it is kinda overkill for what I was initially going for... I am happy with the outcome.
