I often stress laptop warranties, mostly because I know that they tend to break down before the warranties wear out, but also because I hate doing laptop repairs. The tiny parts - which are more expensive than their PC cognates (srsly $75 for a fan?!), cramped quarters, proprietary screws that strip easily and then have to be dremeled out.... yeah, I'll pass.
So, get a warranty. Get the longest warranty they offer. Get the most expensive warranty they offer. Even if it costs half again as much as the laptop in question, get it.
Because when your laptop slips off the edge of a table and lands on its side with a soft thump, you will think nothing is wrong. It was in its case after all. It was protected... right? Wrong.
Hello, shattered LCD screen. (I cried.)
Well, I got the uber warranty. I got accidental damage due to handling coverage. I am going to get this thing replaced for free, or a minimal charge.
If I had skimped on the warranty, I'd have to spend $150 for the replacement screen alone, and then spend an afternoon cursing as I tried to put it in myself.
I am grateful that I took my own advice. And this is yet another example of why you should too.
