I think the main problem you run into is deals, When Toms hardware does their cheap gaming pc builds, if you price em out a month or 2 later you will come to a higher price likely. I've seen and built 400 dollar pcs (minus monitor of course) that at normal full price you would be looking at 600-1000 in parts, it's all about finding the right deals and prices of the moment and hoping you hit that sweet spot when all the deals match up.
Overall Its not a bad idea, maybe toss in a section with low/mid/high end brands little reviews, brands to stay away from. I don't know looks interesting at a glance but a logistical nightmare at worst.
I'm hoping if job market turns up a bit here that this summer/fall to be building a new tower myself but I usually watch trends and reviews like a hawk around that time and build piece by piece over a month or 2 to keep it cheap (unless of coarse it's a commissioned friends build, then I build a few different pcs and let them choose the one they want, after 3 hours or explanations.
