I'm looking to upgrade my WoW computer which is just that, a WoW computer. Currently I'm using a system with 1.8ghz, 2gb ram, and Raedon 9800. windows xp SP3. I recently ran across an ad on Craigslist for a Pentium 4 3.2ghz with 1.5gb of ram, which i presume I can take my ram and pop in the new tower, or purchase 2 more sticks and go for 4GB of ram. the video card that the new system would come with would be ATI Raedon with 256mb (i don't know what this means and if it's high or low). the cost would be 80 dollars.
My idea would be to purchase it, connect my HD to it, download appropriate drivers and play WoW on the faster computer. The processor seems faster and I presume i can either keep my 2GB or get extra ram, if need be, for better performance. I'm not sure if this is an upgrade or a lateral move where I gain in one aspect but lose to another. I can also replace the PSU it would come with, with my own.
Game settings currently are set at 'fair', a long way off from where it was when i first started using this system. :(
Any input would be appreciated.
My knowledge on putting things computer pieces together is pretty good, my knowledge on whether they are compatible is not so good, usually trial and error and troubleshooting after playing with things.

Edit: the seller also offered the following for $180
"I have an amd machine with a 64 bit processor. Windows 7 ultimate 64 and 3 gb of dual channel ddr and a 7600gt bfg nvidia card I can sell for $180."
I would like to just switch out my HDD though, so to keep all my settings, binds, addons, and avoid reinstalling the game and patches.

Well, first off, just popping your current HDD into another machine may or may not work. Sometimes it'll boot, and you wind up needing to reinstall drivers n' things. Other times it'll bluescreen at start. Not usually a great plan. As I don't play WoW, I'm not as familiar with how that game's install works - I know for FFXI you can copy the game folder over and avoid needing to redownload stuff.
Regarding the machines...
I kind of doubt that you could use your RAM. It's possible, but you don't have the specifics in there - a 1.8Ghz could be one of the earlier generation P4s, which had a few varieties of RAM. A 3.2Ghz is a later revision, and may even be using DDR2.
Video card situation is also difficult to say, since you only have the memory size for the other machine. It's possible that the 3.2 is still using AGP though, in which case you could drop in your 9800. Even the AMD isn't completely clear for this given the information - the 7600GT had an AGP variant, one of the last AGP boards made.
There's not enough info on the AMD system either to really say. An "Athlon 64" could be from '03 through to around '07. If it's a more recent version, then it could be in a socket AM2 motherboard that could possibly hold a newer Athlon or Phenom, and would have PCIe graphics n' all. Or it could be a complete dead end for upgradeability.
IMO, if you're considering things like that, you might just consider saving up a few more bucks to build a low end box. Or, at the very least, wait until something with more current tech comes along. IE, get something with PCIe and not AGP increase your options for graphics cards.
