Okay so basically, I am pretty dimwitted when it comes to computers, but i just bought the game and having played ffxi for 6 years, i really want to play this.
Basically I launched ffxiv and it made me install directx/windows service pack 2. Once i did so, I went to run ffxiv. But immediately after i click on the icon, a small black screen pops up and it says "ffxiv has stopped working, windows is looking for a solution...." and closes. I have pretty much no idea what is wrong nor how to fix it. If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated :D

Your video card is one of those Intel chipset abominatons. You might possible be able to make it work with a driver update, but most people who have been reporting issues with that card have had no luck. The only other recourse is 1. hope you have a desktop machine and not a laptop, and 2, hope you have a free video card PCI express slot and money to go buy a new video card, and power leads to run it

Alright thanks so much!! Yes i have a desktop. So according to you in order to fix the problem I just have to buy another graphics card?
Do you or anyone have some list of some brands or types of graphics cards that DOO work. I do not want to go buy one and find out it doesnt work lol. If possible one i could get a bestbuy for like 100 bucks or less.

The main issue you are going to have with adding a video card is that most of the decent mid range video cards are fairly large, and require additional power. They won't fit in all computer cases. What make and model computer do you have specificially? we should be able to check and see if one will fit for you.

The other issue is going to be cost. The ones at best buy will be overpriced by about $50, but even if you order from some place like newegg.com, you are still going to be looking at a $150 - $200 card if you want something that will play the game decently.

Without knowing if your case is up for a better card yet, I'd advise looking at something like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130563

That card is fairly large though, and will require at least 1 6 pin PCI express power cord internally, so I need to know what case you have to see if that is a viable choice.

Kao, how good would a 9800 GT play FFXIV? I'm not asking for me, just more of a budgetary reason for the OP as 9800s can be found fairly inexpensively.

I have a Dell Inspiron 518. I dont believe any parts on it were custom, my parents bought it almost 2 years ago for me. Ya i was curious about the card that the guy above mentioned, it was a bit more reasonable, would the 9800 GT be decent to play the game? Also, what do you mean they cost additional power? Anyways i really appreciate your help:D you've helped me a ton.

The GT would probably run it at medium settings. The GTX+ would be preferable for about $10 more, but FFXIV is a game that uses the latest CUDA engine and Shader model, so if you are building with that in mind as your target you would want something a little newer ideally.

I was afraid of that. Here's your computer inside the case. You have sufficient room to run a decent sized video card, but your power supply doesn't have any additional power cables for running a higher end video card. Period. Not even any you could adapt over.

http://reviews.cnet.com/2300-19017_7-78-4.html?s=1&o=80

So basically you could make it work if you swapped out the power supply AND the video card, but at that point you would also want to upgrade the case anyways to get better cooling for the video card since the fans in that case are pretty underwhelming.

Your only real option is going to be a video card that doesn't require additional power, such as this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121353

That isn't going to play the game well, but it will play the game. If I were you, rather than go that route though I'd consider a more substantial upgrade.

That is a refurbished, Energy Efficient model. It doesn't require an additional power connection. It's not exactly what I'm running, but it's similar. I would HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing the nVidia NTune software. Stock settings for that cards fan are low, and as a result the card runs hot unless you turn up the fans. Without the software the fan ran at about 35%, and the idle temps were in the 60s. I crank the fan up to 100% and my idle temps are in the low 50s.

Alright thank you both I think i have all the information I need. Considering the fact that I'm in a university that costs 30 grand a year, and all of it is being paid for in loans and grants, and the fact i do no have a job, i doubt i will be able to do any big renovations anywhere in the near future. I think I am going to look into the card in the post above. Just to clarify that energy efficient model should fit inside the inspiron 518, and I WONT need a new power supply correct? also once i get the card, how do i change the fan settings? Will it be something i do when I install the card or is there small button or something on it? Thanks a ton this is my last question :D

Also since I am learning more about power supplies and what not, i notice the 518 inspiron comes with a 300W power supply, how many W powersupply would be reasonable or is required? I was browsing some cheaper power supplies and came across this http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Thermaltake+-+430W+TR2+ATX+Power+Supply/9827301.p?id=1218179698427&skuId=9827301&st=power supply&contract_desc=null would this work with the card that you listed above in my computer?

I'd sho0t for at least a 500watt rating, preferably more along the lines of 600+. As PSU's heat up, their efficiency goes down. Many generic PSU's can dip down into the 60 percentiles under heat/heavy load--even the high end 80+ Certified are only guaranteed to give 80% their rated output.

9800 GTX is a good card, it's a small step above mine. You're still going to be looking for *at least* a 500W power supply.

Okay after considering the fact that I need a psu and new card, I was looking for something cheap, but as it seems, my brother has a 650w psu he is going to give me, which leaves me to spend more on my card. I am thinking the GTX460 is a good choice? What are your guys' thoughts? Is it worth the money I would be spending my budget is about 150 dollars, maybe pushing 200. If you have any other good possibilities let me know.
Also, I have been trying to learn more about computers and whatnot. Aside from a psu/new card, is there anything else that would hault my gameplay according to my computers stats?(at top) Anyways let me know!
Thanks!

the 400 series (nvidia) and 5800 series (ATI) are still having some driver funkiness in Windows 7 with some games (may possibly be directX or Win7 issues with the Stackhash crash, still waiting for someone to figure that one out).

Might be better to consider one or two generations back--like a high end 200 from Nvidia, or even a loaded 4800 from ATI. They are powerful enough to run pretty much anything out there--including the new FF14 (it's only a directx9 game anyway). Here's a site with lot of benchmarks you can look at to compare/contrast them:

460GTX is a nice card, definitly check the length clearance issue in your case. You want to make sure you measure exactly how long the card you are getting is before you buy it, and how much space you ahve in there. It's going to be a tight squeeze to get a 460 or a 9800 GTX in there. Also you may very well have to do some case modification to adapt the 650 watt PSU to fit. Dell usually has these goofy PSU mounting flanges at the top of their cases that are in the way. if they are there, bend them out of the way and you should be able to get the PSU to line up with the ***** holes.

I can't stress enough that you have very tight case tolerances in there, and need to be careful that the card you buy fits. For that reason alone, even with the slightly higher cost, you may want to consider buying the card locally so you can take it back if it doesn't fit.

Or you can just Dremel it off like I did.

That works too. Metal shavings in computers scare me so if you do that, make sure you get all of them.

Okay I am back almost two months later. Now that my college semester is almost over and I have time and money I have been looking into graphics cards again. My brother recently gave me a 550W psu with multiple 6/4/8 pin adapters, so I think most cards that fit will work with the computer. Anyways, i was sort of set on the 460gtx but a friend told me nvidia isnt as good as radeon. I was looking at the 6850 cards, ~200$, and was curious what you guys thought of them?

Also I was curious if someone could tell me if the card would work with my system specs posted at the top, and a 550W psu. Thanks I really appreciate all the help, its hard learning these things when you know nothing about computers!

By the way I am looking to play ffxiv

Your friend is an idiot. nVidia make great video cards.

The problem isn't the card, it's how the drivers are woking with FFXIV. The general thought for most games is the nVidia cards perform better with all the eye candy on, but you can pay a higher price, have to deal with the extra heat and (depending on the model) more power draw. But when it comes to FF14 and/or FF11, last I saw, there were still more issues with the nVidia drivers than the ATI's. It's really sad too, because SE was in bed with nVidia for development of both games--yet at the game's release the flagship card that SE was recommending was running the game like crap for the majority of users.

Neither line is "perfect", but the nVidia drivers for the 400 series cards have had more issues. So in the case of the newer lines of cards for FF14, ATI has been a bit more reliable in general. You may not be able to get all the eye candy with max framerates with many of the ATI cards, but the framerates have generally been more consistent.

Actually Nvidia are a little behind in terms of quality with this batch of video cards (400 range vs 5000 range). With the 5000's typically performing slightly better than the equivalent Nvidia.

However, if you're just a casual gamer and not looking to build a super computer this probably won't mean much at all to you, as budget will limit your choices far more than which card is best.

As mentioned earlier, I would go for something in the 200 range of Nvidia, or the 4000 range for ATI, or pick up something second hand if you have any reliable sources. Some people sell on things like GTX 460's to upgrade to 470's etc.

The main problem I forsee with your system is it's very much retail OEM from the looks of it, throwing a monster of a graphics card in there would only be wasted with RAM and CPU bottlenecks down the line.

Regarding drivers, some prefer Nvidia, but there is no clear cut winner. I personally prefer ATI after having some hardware conflicts shortly after using Nvidia drivers, but I'm using an Nvidia card now and it's been pretty smooth running. Nvidia might be slightly more user friendly to update.
