A Linksys WRT 160N V2 is hardly a piece of sh*t router. I'm guessing something is wrong here.
To access router, default gateway IP is 192.168.1.1 default username is blank, and password is "admin". Hopefully you changed that to something else.
A couple things to check. 1, is your wireless access point security enabled and set to at least WPA PSK?, and turned on for all the channels? If I remember right, that router is a dual channel router, which means it has seperate wifi passwords for the 5 Ghz and the 2.4 Ghz wireless channels. If one or more of those is wide open, your neighbors might be downloading crap via your router and slowing your connection down massivly. On the Wireless: Wireless secutity tab make sure security is set for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz channels if our router has both.
Also, under the administration tab, ensure that this little frigging annoying setting is set to disabled:
UPnP: Disabled
With that on, and a comcast modem, your router will clock back to stupid speed every 10 minutes or so.
If all that still doesn't do the trick, go look at the "status" tab, then under "local network" and look at the DHCP table and see if you see any odd devices that you don't know what they are.
Another thing to check, is whatever cable you are using from the router to the modem bad? Cables are cheap and do sometimes fail. might be worth replacing just to rule it out.
