Fastest browser?Follow

First I poo-poo'd IE. Naturally. It sucks.

I was a Firefox diehard for a long time. But sometime last year, the browser began to get slower and slower, and eventually it got to the point where it was taking almost a minute to start up.

So I dumped Firefox in favor of Google Chrome. It worked great for a few months. However, in the last few weeks it's slowed down considerably again. It keeps giving me a "Resolving Host" message in the lower corner. It's really frustrating that something that was one miliseconds fast has turned into yet another clunker like Firefox. Chrome's suggested fix, turning off DNS prefetching, has done nothing.

So, is there a browser out there that is no frills and no lag?

Firefox starts up in a few seconds for me.

Are you sure you don't have any other issues happening, like something wrong with your PC or internet connection that is causing the slowdowns? Sounds to me like no matter what browser you use, they eventually start slowing down, which would point to the problem not being the browsers, but something they have in common (like your PC, Network, or ISP).

I'm a big advocate of Chrome, and it's always been the fastest for me, but an odd error that I've recently been hit with has now kept me from using my favorite browser.

So I'm back on Firefox right now. I've been doing some tweaks to try to make it perform a little better, and I think you'll probably find that they work for you.

Ever heard of HTTP Pipelining? It really helped me get some extra speed from the browser. I can't find the initial guide that I used to do it, which was very comprehensive and had many more tweaks, but here's a quick one that I found on Google that'll give you an idea of the process. My Firefox now performs about as fast as Chrome used to, and the UI even responds quicker due to some of the other tweaks from the site I originally used.

There are a lot of guides like that which will help you get better performance. Google around for some more tweaks to the about:config files and I'm sure you'll find some helpful ones.

#4REDACTED, Posted: Sep 05 2010 at 9:41 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I have been using the Firefox for a few months, it turns out to be good. Last week, one of my friend recommend a kind of new browser to me--Chrome. When I begin to use this one, I dump other ones right away, 'cause it is excellent with high speed. Maybe you can have a try.

If you are using the Cooliris plugin with Firefox it's the cause of a huge memory leak. With the plugin I was averaging 800-900K memory used, without dropped the usage down to 130-150K.

I use Chrome and I have no problems. I don't even have FF installed on my computer.

Are you using a lot of add-ons? The only one I have for Chrome is their Adblock.

... did you even read the whole OP?

The "Resolving Hosts" bug is apparently an issue that's plagued Chrome since beta. I've done a few things at Google's suggestion, including switching to Google Open DNS, but I still get it every once in a while.

It seems the culprit isn't Chrome itself, but Spybot, that nifty little free program that I use to clean out cookies and stuff. It stuffed the hosts file of Chrome with several hundred files it has to parse.

I'm running one last spyware check with Spybot, then I'm going to uninstall it and see if that fixes the problem . . .

Hmm, strange. I have (and love) Spybot, and it's never caused any noticeable issues for me.

I'm not doubting your issue, of course. Just musing over what the possible differences could be that cause you to have issues when I don't. I wonder what they are?

If you can't solve your Chrome issues, I'll again suggest the Firefox hacks that I posted above. I'm on my second day of using the revamped browser and loving it. With the Google Chrome Theme for Firefox, and the upped speed, it's like I'm just using Chrome with NoScript. Smiley: grin

I only wish I could do a Google search in the address bar. Man I loved that feature.

Have you kept up with the newest releases of FireFox? I was having issues too, but there was a big memory leak in 3.5.something that would put me over 1GB. Now, with 3.6 I don't think I can even get over 250K trying.

Using Firefox 4.0 beta and there's a few things I'm not enjoying very much. At least their feedback panel is super easy to reach - I've sent them about 10 frowny faces today.

Chrome just came out with a new Beta 7 build, so I'm gonna play with that and see if they've fixed the pesky host issues.
