New laptop, ffxi, and windows 7Follow

#1 Jul 10 2010 at 6:27 PM Rating: Decent
first off i have read thru alot of old threads here and on other tech sites.

I have been playing ffxi for almost 6 years on the same laptop.

this week i bought a new laptop becasue the old one is on its last leg

Loading the game went smooth as well as doing all of the updates from POL

the game seems to run fine in starter city's and in most zones, the problem comes when im in whitegate, on average wile running thru whitegate the screen freezes for 2-3 every 30-45 seconds. It feels like alot like communication lag but im not used to it comepletly freezing the screen. It does seem to accept some keyboard or mouse commands while it is frozen. the characters loading seem to be whats locking it up.

I have minimized almost everything i can within ffxi gameplay and turned alot of things off in windows

New machine specs

windows 7 64 bit
intel i5 processor
4 gig ram
500 gig hardrive
intel hd graphics card

within windows i have set pol to run as admisntrator and run in compatibility mode with windows xp sp 3

i have turned off google updater and a few other things that run in background.

Also i have downloaded updates for intel hd graphics as well as directx10

I am running out of things to try, i plan to call intel monday if i cant find the problem, but im hoping some of you may have had similar problems with windows 7.

any help woill be apprecitated

Did you download FFXI from Steam/Direct2Drive, or are you using the original installation disks? If it is the disks did you install straight from the CD, or did you use the Windows Vista installer from SE?

Are you using a wired or wireless internet connection? Also Windows 7 uses DirectX 11, so you may want to upgrade DirectX again.

Try the game in Win XP SP2 mode and Windows Vista mode. Also, which version of Windows 7 is installed on the laptop?

Try this, it's a virtual Windows XP program for Windows 7. Install it then install FFXI to it and try it out, should work better than the compatibility mode. If all else fails you can try creating a dual boot on your laptop and install the Windows XP OS on the second partition, or download the Ultimate Collection from Steam/Direct2Drive. Normally those companies make sure that the downloadable versions work on the OS.
